Need Help Identifying an Insect

I recently caught a mess of these critters on flypaper in my apartment. (I live in Baltimore Maryland).
One person told me that they are fruit flies. But I am looking for a better informed opinion.
One image in particular is clear, which I have marked with a rectangle.
