I would love to tour a TJ store. When we go visit family, it is on my to do list. There is one where the kids live. I will add the milk to my shopping list. I looked today at the local dollar stores but saw nothing.
Feels cooler tonight but no temps forecast to be below 43° for another week. What a mild winter this far...
Rain Rain and More Rain
Whoooooohooo did we ever get the wind today! (Sunday) Grits, you probably got some more Texas dirt in your garden again! (not from my garden since we have a cover crop growing). The sky was a dirty orange around here.
Kristi, the winter certainly has been mild and boy are we thankful for it too! We could use some more rain though. The winter veggies are doing wonderful. The spinach is just now big enough to start harvesting. We had so much that I took bags of arugula and cilantro to our local health food store for them to give to costumers on Friday. ( It seemed such a waste to just give it to the chickens.)
Grits, the new 5 gallon buckets from our local bakery have plastic handles unfortunately so after using them a few months to haul water and compost they (handles) tend to break. But they come with lids to use for storage. Do you ever go to those plant round ups? What is the closest one to Talihina OK? Oh, and what did you mulch your garlic with? Hay or straw?
well now I used what I have the most of Sweet Gum leaves and of course there is always some balls mixed in I use my push mower with a bagger so I get a pretty good mulch I have heard tha the sweet gums have a chemical that will kill other plants but have never seen any evidence to that and I have 4(used to be 5) large trees every year I swear that I am either going to have them cut or just surrender and leave it be ... The closest RU to Talihina is Little Rock and I be thinking it is in oct..You know a rope of the right diameter make a great bucket handle even a smaller size is fine when paired with some PVC pipe (McGiver U.) and that might just make a great project for my spring gardening class this year it will be a 6 week class so I need to come up with a craft project for each week ..Much better if we do some sort of garden related craft as well as our class discussion...
Beautiful rain falling here in central Texas this afternoon with more promised tonight and tomorrow!!
The same here, thank Goodness.
Well ladies I am guessing it has moved on up because it just started @8:15pm we had a beautiful day and was talking to another gardener and she sai the rain that was forecast was a bust because it was still shiny bright out.. It is perfect as I had hauled a load of horse manure and hurried to place it in some of the raised bed planters I am preparing ..The rain should soften it and cause it to settle sure hope that is what happens as I overfilled the planters figuring they would settle quite a lot ..I think I should need about 3" of soil on top what do Y'all think ??? PS it is very old manure
I think you have a good thing going there.
it rained all night and is still raining kinda wish I had left the rain gauge out...
Just finally stopped here. No idea of how much we got but was woke up many times in the night with downburst. The back of the yard flooded as usually when the soil is saturated and we get downpours. Since the lot slopes a lot it only came up to the foundation of the shop, nothing major. The ducks in the pond close by will be in heaven though.
We got 3.5 inches, pretty decent I think.
We got 1.6 inches yesterday. Looks like we may get more today. One of the peach trees is being silly and starting to bud since the weather has been so warm the last week or so.....
Hey Grits, do you go that far (Little Rock) to the RU? To make the bucket handle do you just slip a piece of cut PVC pipe onto the rope before attaching it to the bucket? What size PVC is best? How do you attach the rope if the knot won't fit in the slots where the handle is suppose to go?
I sure wish we were closer as I think could learn a lot of gardening tricks from you. and could give you buckets.
Roads are floodin coming from LRock to Dallas, flash flooding, but missed the twisters farther south this time, pastures look like marshes instead of prairies, feels like March down here...
I ended up with a bit more than 4.5" in my rain gauge. LOVED going to sleep and waking up hearing the rain. It's also been good for the area lakes.
Okay Ladypearl the size of the PVC depends on the size of the rope as how to heep it in the bucket drill a hole that the rope will just fit thru ..Tie a knot in one end of said rope insert the untied end into the hole from the outside slide the short (4" ) piece of pvc onto rope..Insert the rope thru the hole on the opposite side of the bucket from the inside . then cut the rope to the desired lenght and then tie a knot in the rope ..Think i will do one today so I can take a few pix..
We picked up another 1/2" of the wet stuff overnight, bringing our total to 5"!! Woohoo! Lake levels are up by 2-4 feet. So thankful for the rain!
Thank you again Grits - you're very helpful. I hadn't thought of drilling holes into the bucket (that should have been obvious now that you told me) for attaching the handle. I was going to try to force the rope knots into those little slots where the original handle attached. What a pain that would have been.
Wow, Stephanie and Drthor! That's a lot of rain! Hopefully, (especially if it keeps up), the water shortage problems will be over for a while.
Now Ladypearl I have a question for you Why are you up at 03:43 ??????????????????????????????
That is Texas for you, but let us not complain.
There you go, as they say, every cloud has a silver lining!!! Good for you.
Grits, sometimes I'm up finishing a project (while the rest of the family is sleeping - I get a lot more done when there are no interruptions) like painting, and I check the computer (email and DG) right before I go to bed. I have lived overseas a couple of times and ever since, nights and days are not so well defined for me.....
Well now I know I was envisioning you coming home from a swing shift job and still wound up from work and doing this to relax enough to go to sleep..good thing I did not have a home PC while I worked ..Work and the PC were all I would have gotten done
Agree with nite/day not being regulated to bankers hours - but I thot it was just age doin it, chuckl, always thot we needed 30 hr days - 10 to work, 10 to play, and 10 to sleep. 24 is just too short.
You are so right Kittriana; there is always more to do than there is time and energy to do it.....
We just got hammered again by a line of severe T storms that rumbled and banged it's way thru yesterday starting about 2 pm and lasting well past midnight.twas likely no more than 2 inches of rain but at times it seemed much harder..I had just planted some new asparagus crowns on Wed.. and got a pretty nice shower on them and now a soaking so they should be okay unless they have washed away
Eastern Williamson County got hammered. We, on the other hand got nothing. : (
Woke to rains soaking us down in Magnolia, and the little creeks floating out onto the roads, prettyy sure what didnt burn up last year is abt to drown this winter, chuckle
