Quote of the day

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Okay, is that a typo or tongue in cheek? Little oaks? Mighty acorns? I guess it's all in how you look at it.

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

Ha! I'll bet he did that to see if anyone noticed. Am I right, David?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Busted. It was me. When I read the quote, I slid all the way down in my chair and prayed that God would open a hole in the floor and swallow me up. When that didn't happen, I prayed nobody else would notice it. I'm 0 for 2 this morning :)

Here's an explanation, if you're interested. When I collected quotes, most of them were easy to cut and paste from other sites. I remember this one had some odd formatting, and I had to manually type it into the list I sent Dave.

Soooo, I've now demonstrated that I can transpose words as well as numbers. Perhaps that means I was praying to my dog instead of God this morning? Regardless, I hope ya'll got a good chuckle......and I'm glad folks are reading the quotes!!!!

I read it,read it again, and again, and I thought, well,ok;Had to be vols. I wasn't going to say anything, onless you posted something about it. Now we can all give you a bad time about it.
Vols, I think you was praying to the right person, just not hard enough or loud enough.heehee

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

vols, my mine is backwards. I read it, and I guess my mind transposed it back to right:)

Yes, I'm the same as tiG. I read the quote and thought about just the other day, excitedly coming up from the woods with a big bag of acorns. I rushed over to Trish and, in amazement, explained how such a tiny acorn will become a massive mighty oak.

I was so busy reliving that memory when my eyes passed over the quote, I completely missed the error! I had to double-check it when I saw this thread.

chuckling...

Dave

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

Ok, I am totally lost where are the quotes?? Is there a forum special for them? I must have been blinded...

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Schmetterling, it was in this morning's daily newsletter. For those who haven't checked the box to subscribe, see what you miss??? giggle.

At any rate here was the (mis)quote: "Parvis e glandibus quercus" -- Latin expression translated 'Little Oaks from Mighty Acorns Grow!'

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

That is a typo? I thought it quite clever! I figured we were gonna have some fractured quotes for fun now!

Joshua Tree, CA(Zone 8b)

Im with you ZANY! I thought it was a clever ruse.( is that a word?!)
hehehe

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Me too Zany and Michele ! I thought they where just playing with us. lol

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Ummmmmm, yeah - that's right! I remember now - it was on purpose, just to mess with ya'll!!! (Can you tell I'm not a good liar?)

I guess it was kind of a funny wordplay, if unintentional.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

he he GV. (((((GV))))))

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Maybe it wasn't a mistake at all. Maybe they really were mighty acorns grown in the same place that those football size sweet potatoes were grown in the other post. Hehehe

When I read that, I thought I might be missing some deeper meaning, LOL! I went to an online Latin to English dictionary and it didn't have the translations for the words!

"Est Britania parva insula? Non! Britania est magna insula!" That is about all I remember from the few weeks I took of high school Latin before dropping the course! Translation anyone? I actually remember this!

Oh, and "Veni. Vidi. Visa" I came, I saw, I shopped.

Rated PG for a bit of language in one: http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/~haroldfs/family/venividi.html

All prayers are answered. Sometimes the answer is "NO". Now, is it vici or visa? I'm asking seriously, because I'm too lazy to look it up as it doesn't seem to be in any of my garden mags. BTW, this is fun, thanks, go_vols.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

It's Vici, but it's just a joke - Visa/shopping. Instead of I came, I saw, I conquered. :o)

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Okay, Kimberley, I thought so, but wasn't sure. You brainiacs always know how to play with things like that, leaving me sitting here with my thumb in my mouth trying to figure it out.

Spring Hill, FL(Zone 9a)

Besides veni, vidi, mastercard just doesn't get it done.

GW

OK poor school girl latin translation here,
'Est Britania parva insula? Non! Britania est magna insula!"

Is Britain a small island?, No Britain is a great/large island

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Hip, hip Hooray for Baa! Isn't it sad that phrase is what I remember most vividly? I did learn to pay attention to prefixes and suffixes on words, though - they can tell you a lot about the word's meaning. Like mal meaning bad, as in malodorous. Oh, but mal is French, isn't it? I never learned a foreign language! Aaaaargh!

Okay, here's an intentional fractured quote for ya'll. Let's see who can translate the fastest:

"Cogito ergo Dioscorea"

I think therefore Yam

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Close......but there's a pronoun missing.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

I Yam?

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

I yam what I yam and I ain't no yammer.
Popeye

Go Vols

Technically no ... Dioscorea is simply Yam there is no ending to the noun to indicate a pronoun :) but I did know what you meant.

Baa who is having a pedantic day

I might one day learn how to spell in english!

Baa, I wholeheartedly concede your point. I took three years of Spanish (Latin was considered "dead" in my era), and the best I can do is order off a menu at our local Mexican restaurant. I have absolutely no idea how to conjugate Latin, and probably never will.

When I stumbled on this fractured quote, I found it most commonly quoted as "cognito ergo spud". I figured since we're a gardening site, the least I could do is replace "spud" with the botanical name for "yam".

Hope ya'll enjoyed it :)

Go Vols

It was very good, I'm just being pedantic today.

I can't remember much about Latin grammar, come to think of it, I don't remember English grammar being taught in my school. Oh well I get by in English most days ;)
