Please tell me what type of spider this is

Grand Rapids, MI

A friend found this in his house. What type of spider is this? He has little kids. Dangerous? I don't think so, but he'd like to be reassured.

Bold jumper - Phidippus audax. Can have a painful bite, not dangerous.

i've never been bitten by one, and have handled them since i was little. i'm sure they can bite, but they're one of your gentler spiders. i have two roaming my house now. the only spiders i really LIKE in my house.
extremely good at catching flies in the summer when they get in (I live next to a cow pasture).

I agree with Lady Ashley. I, too, have been handling them for years and have never been bitten. I always give them an escape route. He can use these great spiders for teaching purposes.

Had a bumper crop of these on the flowers this year. They ocassionally get in the house but I just leave them alone.

the only spider that is completely welcome inside my house (and kind of jumping spider really). they are just so darn cute and they seem to have a personality unlike any others.

Very true. It amazes me too how fantastic their eyesight is.

lol, their eyes seem to follow you, don't they?

We also love jumping spiders and let them roam the house (inside and out) because they catch and eat flies and moths. I don't think anyone in our family has ever been bitten (even when we handle them they are not aggressive).

Yes they do seem to follow you. Its neat to watch them.
