Best conditions to overwinter mirabilis jalapa tubers in Z5?

New Milford, CT

Usually I just start seeds indoors in March, but this year I wound up with a couple of tubers that came up readily and I want to try to store them in the hope that the plant will bloom earlier in the summer than seed-started ones do. It's no fun having flowering annuals for just a few weeks in late summer! If anyone thinks this is a waste of time, though, please let me know!

Past experience with tubers is that they either get too dried out, or too wet and moldy.

Hi, Cindy!

Thanks for the question, as I am wondering that very same thing. I hope that we get an answer. I LOVE 4 o'clocks! I remember them from my childhood. The nectar is sweet and tasty. Someone said it was poison, but probably not in the small amounts I tasted. I am going to try and start some early under lights this year.

I have one that I've had for six years. All I do is plant it in a pot in the fall and water it once in awhile. Right now it has sprouts.
