Hello everyone, happy Monday Morning:
Just wanted to show you the difference between the salmon cactus and the orange zygo cactus in color. Here is the buds that are showing on the orange this morning. This is the Orange Stock Zygo from Hirt. The salmon was put up yesterday in case you missed it.
Gita, I will be happy to help you with information to start your own business. If you want to do it right it will be a bit costly getting started. I will dmail you the answers to your questions, not because it is private, but because it will take too much time in this thread and not everyone really cares about it. If you want to see how it is done on eBay just go to eBay and search for Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Holiday Cactus........pick one and open it and see what the description is, how they will ship and basically it is all there. How to do it is the part I guess you want to know. I had to be certified by the State of NJ as a nursery to ship west of the Mississippi. Maybe you need to check with your Department of Agriculture first to see if you need that. If so, the price of inspections can be a factor. You need to have your plants inspected for insects, etc. If you send plants to Calif. and you do not send them bare root, they will keep them and they never get delivered depending on who is inspecting that day. LOL. Most people do not put LIVE PLANTS on the outside and the things get through. I can not do that because I sell both retail and wholesale. I need to be sure the items are delivered after going to the expense of shipping and packing.
I will get back to you when I get caught up here. I am getting ready to open the store for Christmas and I must get the inventory out and placed.
Have a great day and keep warm. The temps are beginning to drop at night and get warmer during the day.
Sweater and sneezing weather. LOL Later. JB
Holiday Cacti General Discussion Part #3
Quick answer to Cole post. YES, I am proud to say I have 100% on eBay as a seller. Also on Daves Garden if you click on JBSPlants@JBsbirdsandMore, in plant scout and garden watchdoog you will see on Watchdog gave me the Top 5 Award last year. That is why I take special care in communicating with the customers and packaging plants. Talk about this later. I must go. JB
JB---
Please do not take time out of your busy day to write me the D-mail. You explained enough in the above Post.
I really AM NOT interested in starting my business. I was just curious about all that is involved in
you wheeling and dealing with all the plant shipping...
I have shipped asst. plants over the years..but nothing as fragile as a CC.
Brug cuttings--Ric Rac cactus starts--Pregnant Onions--etc....
I will look you up in the Plant Scout....Take it easy and have a wonderful Christmas Season business....
I DON'T know how you do all that at your age!!!!
Took a couple of pictures of the salmon one just now. w/o a flash--the lens stays open a bit longer--and so some of the pictures
are not 100% in focus. Here is some of the blooms....
The peach/salmon ones do have very delicate shading! One of mine (not sure which until it blooms, but it's another cute little one from doc) is a pale lemon yellow.
Joyanna's favorite is the hot pink or magenta one... we have a big hanging basket of it that hasn't budded up yet this year, but it's really spectacular in bloom.
This was from a couple years ago... it's in a bigger pot now (which might be why it hasn't bloomed yet... they seem to like being quite root-bound).
That's VERY pretty, Jill....Love flowers taken in light shade. It sure brings out the color.
I just re-took the Salmon macro of one bloom--and moved my tennis shoe....
This looks pretty good....
OK! Gotta get busy cooking. Temps will be in high 60's today.
Might even get to mow my lawn for the last time....
G.
Beautiful plant Jill.
WHEW am I relieved. Gita, I read the post quickly before I went out to feed and I read it that you were thinking of going into business. Cross that off the list of to do things. LOL.
I love the different shades of Salmon. I often think how brilliant some of these colors would be if they were not messed with by the professional propagators. I love a pure plant. The hybrids are nice, but they are so overdone and so many. Makes it really difficult for a person like me who likes to keep it simple. I am now going to go to work. I promise. JB
Oh, Critter, looks like the perfect plant for a little girl to dance beneathe and dreamof wood sprite and fairies and other magical things! Thanks for sharing.
Gita I think you could have a very successful "business" sending out containers filled with the glorious smells emanating from your kitchen when you go on a cooking spree! Hope you and your HD company totally enjoy your feast this week.
WhooHoo JB on your Top 5 ranking. You really deserve it!
Phew----
One dish down--and one to go. I did the "Sweet and Savory Kale". MAN! Is that ever good!!!
All of you should try it for your TH.Giv. dinners.
If you want the recipe--D-mail me. OR--if no one objects--I can post it here. Then you all get ti see it...
Here is my whole Salmon CC. See how strong and tall it grows? Taller and more upright than
all the others.
My red ones haven't even budded up to the "elongated bud" stage.
Their growth is more compact--the leaf segments are shorter...
Here is my whole Salmon CC.
Hello I'm new to DG,but I have been looking at the pictures here. What kind of fertilizer's do yall use on your cc.
They are all so beautiful. I have one that has been in my family for a good while, it has salmon blooms.
Hope everyone has a nice day
Gita, I would love that recipe. Can you dmail it to me?
Hi Jojoe, I feed all of my plants a fertilizer that found the recipe for in the brug forum. I will look for the link. They seem to thrive on it.
I checked the greenhouse this morning. The buds are swelling, but no blooms yet. It is still very warm here tho, so it will be a while before they start to bloom. I can't wait to see what opens this year. I sure hope my yellow one blooms.
Gotta run, I am still supposed to be working.
Sea ya,
linda
Gita, go ahead and print the recipe on the thread. I do not think anyone would mind. They can skip over it.
Hello Jo Joe, welcome to our little bed of cactus. We do have some lovely plants and I am sure everyone would be happy to share what they use. I will even copy a little bit I have on fertilizing your CC if you would like to see it. I am lazy when it comes to fertilizer so I just feed Miracle Grow for houseplants. They seem to like what they get. I feed all my plants the same thing, so if they do not like it they just ignore it I guess. Can plants do that??? Ha. I talk to mine, so maybe someday they will answer.
I know I sent some cuttings to some of the girls and they were marked orange and pink.....well that is not so. That is the one that turned out to be salmon, so if I sent you one that said Petra orange and pink.....mark it Salmon. I just changed all the cuttings I have growing for sale. What a PITA job that was.
See you later. JB
OK! With JB's permission--I will share the "Sweet and Savory kale" recipe with you all.
Sweet and Savory Kale By: SJRJA
"This quick and tasty recipe combines vitamin-packed kale with both sweet and tangy ingredients for a colorful side dish."
Ingredients
· 2 tablespoons olive oil + some diced bacon as part of the fat.
· 1 small-med. onion--diced
· 2 cloves garlic--minced
· 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
· 4 teaspoons white sugar (optional—see notes)
· 1-tablespoon cider vinegar (add more!)
· 1 1/2 cups chicken broth (home-made or canned)
· 4 cups stemmed, torn (and rinsed-if needed) kale
· 1/4 cup dried cranberries
· salt and pepper to taste (I did not add salt)
· About 1/4cup diced, smoked ham.
· 1/4 cup slivered almonds-toasted--a yummy add-on.
Directions:
1--Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Stir in the onion and garlic; cook and stir until the onion softens and turns translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the mustard, sugar, vinegar, and chicken stock, and bring to a boil over high heat. Stir in the kale, cover, and cook 5 minutes until wilted.
2--Stir in the dried cranberries, and continue boiling, uncovered, until the
liquid has reduced by half, and the cranberries have softened. About 15min.
Notes by Gita:…This is VERY, VERY good!
--Kale comes in a BIG bag—so that just about quadruples the amounts here.
IF you cook it all. (Why not?) You can freeze the rest in serving-size portions.
Buy local and as fresh as you can—and it will already be washed and clean.
--Now, as usual, I have to add something to a recipe that, I think, will make
it taste better. SO—I added some diced, smoked ham OR diced, thick bacon.
Brown with the onions and garlic-OR- brown the ham or bacon first..
Kale just needs some smoked meat in it! Amen!
****IF you use the dried Cranberries (PLEASE do!) you can reduce the sugar.

Sweet and Savory Kale By: SJRJA
The below ingredient amount’s changes are if you use the WHOLE
2lb. bag of Kale. Changes will be in italics.
Ingredients
· 2 tablespoons olive oil + some diced bacon as part of the fat.
· 1/4cup Olive oil—plus about 1/2lb. thick sliced bacon—lg. dice.
· 1 small-med. onion—diced
· 4or 5 small onions—or 2 1/2cups.
· 2 cloves garlic—minced
· Use about 7 or 8 cloves.
· 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
· I used half a small jar of mustard. Or about 4oz.
· 4 teaspoons white sugar (optional—see notes)
· I used about 3Tbs. for this amount…
· 1-tablespoon cider vinegar (add more!)
· I added about 2/3 cup. Taste—and add more if you like.
· 1 1/2 cups chicken broth (home-made or canned)
· Need about 4-5 cups of broth. You can always let it cook down.
· 4 cups stemmed, torn (and rinsed-if needed) kale
· One full, BIG bag (2lbs) of Kale.
· 1/4 cup dried cranberries
· About 1 cup. They sure add a lot of flavor!
· salt and pepper to taste (I did not add salt)
· Just added pepper---about 2tsp. of it. Or—to taste…
· About 1/4cup diced, smoked ham.
· I had at least a cup and a half. Make sure it is GOOD Ham!
· 1/4 cup slivered almonds-toasted--a yummy add-on.
· Half a cup or so will do. It is only for garnish before serving.
· Be watchful when toasting Almonds. They can burn in a flash!
Follow all other instructions as on first page.
Oh Gita, I thought if I said go ahead, you would send me some already made. Humpf. fine thing. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get Kale in New Jersey? That is funny. I'm stopped before I start. I can't get the ingredients.
I wonder if you could use cabbage in place of Kale?
BACK TO TOPIC FOR JO REGARDING FERTILIZER: Jo, after you read everyone of these statements, just make up your mind to do what is best for you. I am not one to mix my own, I do not have time, and I know I would mess it up, so I purchase a Miracle Grow Houseplant or one for cacti if they have it, whatever you can find that would be close to what the information gives you. They really do not need much help to bloom unless you are a fanatic about pushing them as far as they will grow, then you need to study the needs for that purpose.
I was just looking through my notes on fertilizer and my God, there is sounds so complicated to a hobby cacti grower.
The professionals at UMass Extension wrote a fact sheet on Commercial Production of Holiday Cacti. In that they say Holiday cactus has a relatively low nutritional requirement. Then they go on to discuss calcium nitrate and potassium. The link is really very much for professionals.
Another one says, In late Oct. and early Nov. make an application of a 0-10-10 type liquid fertilizer. A second application of this fertilizer can be made in February. During the growing season from April through Sept. fertilize the plants with an all purpose liquid houseplant type fertilizer. The fertilizer you use should have a nitrogen ratio of no higher than 10 percent. Of the three numbers on a fetilizer container, the first number is nitrogen.
Whitton Greenhouses says CC like a constant feed using a soluble fertilizer with trace elements such as 20 20 20 diluted to 1 lb per 100 gal of water.
Another says plants can be fertilized once a month from April to Oct. with a water soluble, blanced fertilizer such as 20 20 20 or the equivalent the middle number is phosphorus on the fertilizer package should be the same or higher than the first number for optinum blooms.
The Stein article on DG says Fertilization should be with half strength water soluble formulas and onlu in warmer weather or after flowering, until new growth is seen and time for repotting.
MY FAVORITE IS THIS ONE.
I like the one from the Cactus Collection which says Zygo Cacti respond to light feedings with diluted liquid fertilizer during spring and summer growing season. Use any good houseplant fertilizer or African Violet food every two to three weeks. Stop fertilizig in early Sept. to allow buds to set. Do not transplant or move the plants once buds have set. Resume fertilizing after flowering.
MY MOTTO IS KEEP IT SIMPLE.
If this helps I am happy for you. If you are more confused, I am so sorry. Join the club. Usually I feed mine every two or three weeks with the Miracle Grow. Not during flowering of course. I stopped feeding when they started budding. This is what works for me. Some of the other ladies may have a much better explanation for you. Stick around, every once in awhile you will learn something. We really have a great group with lots of info to share.
Have a good evening. I am off to read Einsteins Dreams. Don't ask! JB
JB--
Kale is a cool-weather crop. Available right now almost everywhere.
Any farmers stand should have fresh kale available. We here also have it in Grocery stores---
for about %1.29/lb.
I buy mine at a local, small, Farm-type grocery store. They sell it in 2lb, bags (what I used) for $2.
I D-mailed Linda and directed her to search for this old, oddball recipe of a fertilizer--called "The Recipe".....
Hope she can find it....It has beer and all kinds of stuff in it...
They all swear by it....
I have it on my "Watched" Threads. if it comes up again--I will post the link.
Good old liquid MG works for most things. Yes????
Gita
Here is the "recipe" It comes from the brugmansia forum. I use it on everything tho. When Hubby decided he wouldn't drink beer any more, I started using it for the plants. Now the only time we buy 1 is when I need fertilizer. LOL
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/956114/?hl=The+Recipe
Good morning everyone,
Thank you for your advice.I went to the link for "the recipe" I have never even heard of anything even close to any of those. But you never know what will work!?
I use a liquid MG cactus & succulent fertilizer it's 2-7-7 I believe and mine has had 5 blooms open and fall off. It's still full of buds from teeny tiny on up to good size buds.So maybe she likes what I'm giving her.
It's been in my family a long time,it came from my grandmother to my mom and I got it when she passed.Actually I got it when I noticed dad wasn't tending her plants and it hadn't been repotted in probably many years and was about dead.I repotted and there are actually 3 different plants in it.I thought I remembered it blooming pink but these last ones were I guess salmon,by looking at yalls pictures.
Thank you very much for your input.
Everyone have a pleasant day.

Gita
Gita, I am honestly telling you, Kale is very difficult to find in the area where I live. We have to drive several about 10 miles to a Shoprite or Acme or HD or whatever. It may be a cool weather crop in Md. but Honey, it sure is not here. I will look again on Friday when I go into the small town up the road but even in the bagged things they ship in, Kale is not one. As a Kid in PA I remember we got it at the Farmers Market in Lancaster and I would eat it raw. I love it. The stalk if I can remember looked something like Romaine lettuce. I will also ask my friends who have a Farm Market if they can get it. I am determined. LOL
I remember that recipe for fertilizer. Thanks for finding it.
Have a good day everyone. I am off to plant cuttings.
It isn't something you find very often here either. I guess the grocers and farmers don't really want it to compete with collards! LOL I will check at the new Fresh Market though. I can't wait to try it. I love sweet and savory flavors.
No problem. I use that fertilizer for everything. My plants love it. I need to mix up a fresh batch soon.
Gotta run, Took Shawn to get oxygen treatment this am, so now I have to get to work.
Sea Ya,
Linda
very nice, Jill!
I would call your "apricot" yellow, though. it looks as yellow as yellow can to me.
We just got our CC's in at the HD. A few colors I have not seen....
Will bring my camera tomorrow and take some pictures...
One is white--with the gentlest blush of pale, pale apricot or gentle pink.
Not sure--have to look again.
There is also pure white and one similar to my salmon.
Looks like it is time to go shopping then. I will see if my HD has them out yet.
My, I haven't been here a couple of days. Lots of posts!
Gita, I too noticed that my apricot colored and fushia colored CC have different looking segments. One is more elongated than the other.
One of my little ones is a light lemon meringue yellow like JBs, but it hasn't bloomed yet this year. I think I'm glad I don't know their "official" names, as then I'd be trying harder to keep track of which is which plant instead of just enjoying whichever color happens to be blooming!
Good morning,
I went to HD here yesterday and they had a few cc's.I didn't buy one because they didn't look to good they all seemed to have had to much sun and their segments were turning red. They were also thin, the pots weren't full you could easily see the dirt. The one good thing they had them potted with 3 different colors in one pot.I hope they get some more potted that way that look better.
Lowes aren't getting there's until tomorrow.
A question why are they labeled zygo cactus? What's the difference in cc & zc? I know the differences in the christmas, thanksgiving and easter.Besides the time they bloom and how many times they bloom there isn't many other differences, correct?
Walmart here in the town where I live has some and they actually looked better than HD's,yea we have a walmart and that's just about it besides the tractor supply and feed store. The ZC at walmart were nice & full with dark green segments with 2 or 3 buds on every limb.
If anyone can explain the zygo thing please do. THANK YOU
I hope everyone has a pleasant day
Jo
Hi Jo,
Boy, at risk of over-summarizing some of the stuff we've been discusssing--
I think the leaning is toward calling these guys all Zygo, because we so rarely come across a true "Christmas ( non zygo, ) cactus" and the bloom time for the Zygos is determined by the nursery on new commercial plants, and by mother natures lighting on our home Zygos
Now it could be interesting seeing if the bloom varies between colors on thos mixed pots. However there is still the question of how long they grew together in the mixed pots.
Now I am really questioning the "rule" that you don't move them once they set buds. I moved mine a couple times and not one bud fell. And they ship them all over, in bud!!!!!!!
Sally--
Today at my HD we are having our BIG Thanksgiving dinner. I am not working--but will, definitely, go down
and partake of the pig-out. I already took my 2 dishes there yesterday so I could sleep in a bit this morning.
I will take my camera and get some pictures of the mixed colors Zygos. Funny, how, all of a sudden, the same
mix is available! maybe they all come from the same grower? No matter which store gets them....
Have to water my little babies. They are so dry in those itsy-bitsy pots...Most of them have buds..
Gave a few away as gifts to the EFC (Employee Fund Committee) that work so hard to put on
these dinners and get everything set up. There are 5 or 6 people in this committee.
I wanted to thank each and every one of them with a small gift. They all loved it!
I also have heard about not moving the plants after they have buds...but--I think the buds need to be in
that elongated-soon-to-open stage. Then they tend to try to turn towards the light source and could fall off.
OK! Time to do something more constructive......:o)
Marie---
I would give my right arm for windowsills like yours! Mine are all 1 1/2" wide. Nothing!!!
Years ago I put up a narrow shelf the length of my LR triple window. I keep a lot of smaller plants there....
like 6" and 5" and 4"....
The smaller ones sit on mid-window where the top and bottom sashes meet--giving me about 3" of space.
This is my DR end. Those little hanging shelves are long gone--vintage! They sure help.
This pic. is from 2009. No CC on the sashes--yet....
