something like a black widow or a red back

Penticton, Canada

unfortunetly i was unable to get a picture of the spider because it was stuck between a light bulb and a socket but i remember what it looks like. this spider looked exactly like a black widow but instaid of the red hourglass on the bottom it had 3 orange connecting dots on the the very top of its back (well the bulb on the back). i spent a lot of time trying to find out what it was and the closest spider i found was the red backed spider but those are supposed to be in Australia and i live in the Tompson Okanogan British Columbia. i would much appreciate help on finding what kind of spider is is and once again sorry for the lack of a picture of this spider.

No worries on not having a pic. It sounds like a Northern Black Widow. Is this it?

the three species of black widow in north america, have a progression to black in stages, as they molt. with each new exoskeleton, they lose some of the red on their backs

young females, as their bodies turn black, will still show this line of dots, and diminished line,
... then on down to one red dot, and then only the red under the belly.

if she lives long enough she will lose the red hourglass, as well

you can see, in this photograph of uma, ... she has lost all but her last red dot remaining on her back,
right down by her spinneret,

she also has the last trace of top marking at the front end of her abdomen
