Collecting Milky Way & Heavenly Blue Morning Glory Seeds

Holladay, UT(Zone 5a)

Hi Everyone!

I grew Milky Way and Heavenly Blue Morning Glory for the first time this year, and I'd love to collect some seeds. The only problem is that I can't figure out where the seeds are, or what the seed pods look like. I see nothing that looks similar to what I'm used to, when it comes to Morning Glory seeds, where there is a little cluster of seed pods that hang down.

I can see where the flower grows on these, but I honestly can't tell if what I'm seeing is the start of a new flower, or the start of a seed pod. Nothing has turned brown like I would expect. When I took apart one of the pod looking things, it looked more like the start of a flower than anything close to seeds.

Does anyone have pictures of what I should be looking for?

Thanks for any help!

Hey, Natalie. The seedpods are brown and crispy looking and, when crushed, drop the black seeds out. The seeds are big, too, so you'll be able to handle them without losing them. I'll get a pic of mine in the morning. Remind me.

dany, thanks so much for all the great pics! I guess I'm just seeing the green pods, which I thought was possibly a flower bud. I opened one up, and it sure didn't look like seeds in there! It must have been the "end" of the flower, and I was in too big of a hurry! It's my first year with these, and they are very different than the others that I've grown. I can't see even one brown pod anywhere on these two varieties, and I have a lot of vines! I've been collecting seeds off the others for at least a month, so I thought I must have been looking for something that wasn't going to be there, like a brown pod that looks like the others! I guess I now need to know if frost is going to do any damage to the seeds, since it doesn't look like the pods are going to turn brown before it freezes here. It's been down to 34 a couple of times, but I think it's supposed to warm up a bit for at least the next week or so.

Patience is a virtue that I don't seem to have!

Hi Kwanjin! We were out of town and missed the snow storm last week! I'm just glad that it didn't freeze too! Apparently you have brown seed pods on either Heavenly Blue or Milky Way? My Clematis didn't do so well, but these Morning Glory vines sure helped to block out that nosy neighbor of mine! She even mentioned the other day that they were stunning, and she hopes that I'll plant them every year! You can put money on that! These vines saved my sanity!

It wasn't much a snowstorm at our house. We're at a slightly lower elevation than you, so we missed most of it. A few flakes for a minute was all we had.

I have tons of seeds from the Milky Way but not Heavenly Blue. I was disappoointed in that one so I pulled them out.

Anyone want Milky Way seeds?

kwanjin, I may give you a call if I can't find any seeds on mine! Heavenly Blue did fantastic for me, and if I can ever find any seeds, I'll be even happier with it! Another one that did really well was Flying Saucers. I've planted that one in the past, but it hardly grew at all. This year though, it did great! It must have known I was getting desperate to block out the neighbor and took pity on me!

Have you grown Grandpa Ott? I think that one was my favorite this year. It looks like velvet! If I can get enough seeds to share, I'd be happy to give you some.

Our son said we got two or three inches of snow, which quickly turned to mush. I'm just glad that it didn't freeze because I've got about a million tomatoes left to ripen. I don't think I'm much higher than you are, but sometimes we get pounded by snow because of where our house is. Other times, you'll get a ton and we won't get anything. This is a crazy valley we live in!

I have grown Grandpa Ott but my favorite this year is President Tyler. It looks a lot like GO, only darker. On the left trellis.

dany, thanks for mentioning Ipomoea Nil. It's beautiful! I've never seen it before but I'll be sure to look for it next year!

kwanjin, President Tyler IS prettier than Grandpa Ott! I love the dark color! Another one to add to my list! Where did you find the seeds for it? Hopefully it was around here somewhere. I can hardly find any good seeds locally. I got a couple of new ones at Millcreek Gardens, but other than there, I don't know where to look for them.

I'll have tons. No worries there. LOL I'll collect some for both of us tomorrow.
