Hi there!
I came across this spider and I was wondering if someone can help me identify it? The picture didn't upload as well as I would have liked it to. It was a thin, black spider with longer front legs. It had a bright red spot on its underside. I don't think it was a black widow because its abdomen was not round and fat and it was not glossy looking. I am not 100% sure on the exact shape of the red spot. I didn't want to get too close. Please respond if you think you may know what species of spider this is. Thanks! :)
Red and black central Florida spider?
impossible to tell from that picture
at that image quality, i would say that it could definitely be a black widow
their abdomen is highly variable in appearance
the size and 'gloss', particularly.
the abdomen is like a balloon, ... if they're well fed, it is spherical and glossy, because it's 'inflated'
if they have been long without eating, it shrivels, to the point of even matching the cephalothorax in size,
and loses it's gloss entirely
if you can get a closer, sharp picture, i could make a positive identification
Try trapping it under a clear glass or jar, then get yours pics. That would help tremendously.
