Tropical Garden #110
Congratulations Kay! He is too cute. Babies are so precious! How far away is he?
What a precious little one. Congratulations Grandma.
Kay, He is the best "Bloom" you could post !!!!! Such a doll, and Enjoy being a Grandma !! They are our Gems !! Aren't they.
Rita, Please Please, let me know what I could send you. You are an inspiration to us all. I admire you more than you know !!
Wow, Debra that triple datura is gorgeous! Look at those dramatic black stems! Be sure to post a picture when one of them opens a flower.
If you have any seeds left from them I'd love to try to start one. I'll gladly trade you something for them. (I am still collecting wildflower seeds for you)
Sean Alexander Phoenix lives in Virginia. Thanks for the good words - he's already gained to 8 pounds, up from 6 pounds at birth. He's grown TWO inches in three weeks - we think he's going to be a star football player!!!!
What a beautiful color!!
Candela, your pics are so beautiful! On that tall gangly brug, definitely cut it down maybe halfway, but don't cut it right off. Leave some leaves. Down in your warm area it will keep growing all winter. Trouble is, unless you can get somebody to cut away some of the tree branches above the plant, it's just going to grow back gangly again. Baby needs more sun! Root what you cut off and plant another brug somewhere more sunny? They root easily in just a jug of water.
Elaine
thanks Elaine, i wish i had more sun in my yard! i just hacked back the ficus hedge,(more like massive trees) between abandoned house next to me. hopefully i will have somemore sun soon.
this is an example of why i have no sun. just as soon as i cut down a tree i plant a jackfruit the next day. i am truly out of control. is there any hope for me?
I am in the same boat, Candela. I want to grow fruit but have no sunny area left. I have two little papayas waiting to be planted, a pomegranate and a fig (fruiting) plus a passiflora quadrangularis (supposed to make big passionfruit) climbing up into the bamboo stand. All are in pots, and I really have nowhere to put them.
I think a little hurricane would help me clear some space . . . (lol)
candela,
Beautiful plants....what is the red one...I am drawing a blank. Is the yellow the ylang ylang? I can not wait until we can move to our other house...one more month....and I can start planting like crazy!!! I started with some yeterday, but it was 93 and just too hot! I didn't last long digging holes.
the red no idea the name but it is like the pink justica. yes the yellow flower is a ylang ylang, i had a ylang ylang scrub for years and it didn't grow and inch then i gave it to a neighbor which put it in the full sun, now it is tall and gorgeous. the scrub doesn't smell as nice.
this is the regular firespike
Cass, I believe your red-flowering plant is Justicia coccinea, Pachystachys coccinea also called Giant Red Justicia, Brazilian Plume, Cardinal's Guard.
NOW, I WANT one!!!! I will go on a search to find one!
ooo, could I beg a cutting also, candela? That is gorgeous! Another question...I have my clerodenron in sun, but you say yours does well in shade? I may try mine in less sun.
Very Nice pictures again, as always everyone! I hate to about rain but this is getting ridiculous!
Another 4-1/2'' today. Calling for rain through Wednesday! We could barely see the other side of the field at the Carolina Panthers (SORRY JACKSONVILLE) game today for almost the whole 2nd quarter!
Hope everyone has a great week!
Goodnight!
2 inches a week ago did nothing to alleviate our drought. sprinkler system going again tonight.
I would like to trade for some rain - we are REALLY dry down here!
And I'd like to blow some of this cloudy, rainy weather up north to you, Kay. We've had 3 drippy days and I was awakened this morning with thunder again. Haven't had to water in a week!
Our big specialist nursery, Tropiflora is having an open house next weekend c/w music and a barbecue. They have hundreds of gorgeous Tillandsias if you wanted to make a road trip for them. Your trip to see grandbaby isn't in this direction is it? He is adorable, btw.
I just got the email about the open house at Tropiflora and I am so envious of those of you that can visit in person.
We have had buckets of rain here in the last few days, 5" in a half hour the other day. When I mentioned it to a friend who lives about 20 miles from here he said they hadn't had that much in 4 months. My brug flowers are hanging like wet rags now.
We have had extraordinary birds right in the back yard the last few days, I am usually too blind to see them but our sons and the grandkids spotted a Bald Eagle. a pair of Pileated woodpeckers and this guy, a Great Horned Owl. He is hard to see in the picture but was about 20" tall in person. Amazing.
Wow Alice, he's huge! He could probably catch a cat or small dog. Yikes! I love to see bald eagles....we went up to Queen Charlotte (canada) several years ago and there are eagles everywhere up there. What a sight to behold!!
dyzzy, Love tropiflora, I wish I could go......Alice you drive to my house and then I will drive the rest of the way to Tropiflora and we will bunk at dyzzy's house. HA! We would need to save our money to spend at Tropiflora, Right?
You don't mind, do you dyzzy? LOL You just go over there and tell us all what they have, we will give you our order and you buy it for us(we'll reimburse you, promise!!). Sounds like a plan......
OMG yes, let's go. LOL. We could also visit Marie Selby BG and Crowley's nursery. We had better save a LOT of money. :-)
With that owl around we didn't leave the little grand dog off the leash yesterday. I still can't believe we had such a variety of birds in one weekend. I hear the owls all the time but they are usually further away, that one just showed off for the kids.
I'm going Friday morning and will take dh's truck. (in case they will sell me the little AeAe) Will take lots of pictures, you can bet on it. But they do have a great website and very reasonable shipping!
Seriously, Paula, that would be fun, to raid Tropiflora en masse. Down side (not really) is I'd have to get the jungle under control so I could show all of you my garden! Jan can tell you what a wild mess my garden is. It's at its worst right now, and gradually gets neat and tidy (and SO boring!) through the winter. Then spring warms it up and it goes nuts again. That's the circle of my life.
I have two guest beds here, and 3 at my bro's condo just down the street . . .. membership at Selby gets us all in for free . . . sunny Florida . .. beaches, birds and butterflies all year!
