My harvest yesterday.
A few radishes for my DH, lots of broccoli shoots and various greens ... delish ...
FALL/WTR GARDEN HARVESTS 2011. POST YOUR PICTURES HERE!!!
I had to harvest these kohlrabi because they were starting to bolt already.
A while ago I wrote in one of the thread that I did remove the bottom leaves of the kohlrabi to give it to my DH pets.
If you look at this picture the smaller bulbs on the outside kept their leaves, while the four in the middle had the bottom leaves removed.
You can see how much larger they are.
.... but I also still have lots of huge kohlrabi bulbs in the garden that have all their leaves ...
I really dunno if it made any changes to remove the leaves ...
... maybe it was just LUCK ...
They are best friends those two .. always together ...
I carry them around in the laundry basket for fun ... I guess they wanted to go for a ride ....
I have planted 3 o4 kohlrabi this year and they're ready to be picked. How do you prepare them?
I slice them like an apple and eat them raw with a little S&P. They're like the apples of the cabbage world. Great low calorie snack food!
Could also shred them into a salad. Little EVOO, vinegar, S&P.
Here one more recipe for your Kohlrabi hrp50.
My DH loves this one:
POLPETTE DI KOHLRABI (=kohlrabi fritters)
1 small kohlrabi, diced in very small pieces or grated
1 medium potato, diced in very small pieces or grated
1 tbsp chives, small chopped
1 egg
3 tbsp flour
1 tbsp milk
salt and pepper
vegetable oil or peanut oil (do not us: canola or olive oil)
In a stainless steel bowl mix: kohlrabi, potato, chives, and egg.
Add flour and milk a little bit at the time to make a stiff batter.
Add salt and pepper at your choice.
Heat the oil at 350F.
Add the batter one large spoon at a time. You can keep them round or squeeze them flat.
Fry each fritter for 4-5 minutes on each side. Drain excess oil on paper towel ... add salt if you like and serve hot.
YUuuummmyyyyyy
Hi,
This PICTORIAL THREAD is dedicated to the wonderful gardeners who are harvesting their bountiful harvests in Zones 8-9a (or any other zones that are harvesting at this time).
It's March 2012, and there are over 210 posts. Time to start a new thread for Spring 2012? Is there a way to "link" to a new one to that replies to posts on this thread automatically appear there?
-Rich
Thx. Gimme a minute.
Unless that is the infamous "Gargantuan" variety you're growing (LOL!!!), I'd say yank that puppy quick, before it gets too woody!
Refer to your Days to Maturity recommendation on your seed packet. This will give you a ballpark of when you should be harvesting your mature fruits/veggies. A couple days either way won't hurt you. At least you have an approximate idea of when you should be harvesting.
Hugs!
Linda
OMG !
hrp50 your Kohlrabi is ready !!!
It is HUGE !! well done !!
Kohlrabi fritters tonight !!
ps. remember frying oil temperature at 350F
Your Kohlrabi looks kind of puny, drthor. Maybe you should have let it grow a little longer. (ha)
My first FENNEL of this season.
It is the best Fennel I ever tasted.
I think I have fennel-envy! A couple of my plants actually resumed growing after being devastated by chickens and then squirrels, but they're nowhere near that nice.

hrp50
It is the fennel that is so large ...
Kohlrabi tastes better when is about 4-5" ... also I had a guest here and I wanted her to try to eat them ...
well ... she really liked them both ... but she spent the all afternoon in the bathroom ... she said that they gave her "gas" ...
ah ah ... I cannot believe it !
drthor
Your last post about your guest 's gas is what's called "a little too much information". (ha)
ah ah
Hrp50 that kohlrabi looks like "space debris". How big is it? It's going to take me a while to get over the "gas" post. THAT is really funny in any language. Lol
Not as large as drthor made them out to be. Here is a picture of the 3 kohlrabi next to an egg for size relationship comparison. They are a funny shape, somewhat like the lunar landing module prior to me removing the leaves and stems, and soon they will be transformed into fritters.
Where is the picture? Or are they really tiny?
hrp50 you are the "KOHLRABI UBER"
Was the inside soft or hard like a rock?
Those kohlrabis look pretty big to me. I prefer them no bigger than a tennis ball- I find usually bigger ones are not sweet, and gettwoody in texture. I really like them thin sliced and sauteed in garlic butter. I wish they didn't take so long to mature.
The kohlrabi feel kind of hard, not soft on the inside, although I haven't cut them open yet. Is that bad? I just didn't know when to harvest them so I let them keep on growing. With fritters on the menu tonight, whether I like them or not will determine if I grow them in my garden next year. I like them if for no other reason than they have a neat look.
When you look at the picture, don't you hear someone saying, "Houston, we have a problem"?
LOL! I was wearing my glasses. Those things are huge. Yes, Houston I think we have a problem.
hrp50,
yes on the outside the bulb is hard. No worries.
Just remove the outside of the bulbs and cut a slice ... and eat it.
In my opinion it tastes like a mix of an apple and a cucumber ... love it !
Slice like an apple. Just a little salt. Great low Cal crunchie, munchie snack.
