Just found a spider in our backyard and want to make sure it's not poisonous for the kids.

Orb weaver, probably an Araneus sp. - technically venomous (as are nearly all spiders - see 'sticky' on spider bites), but harmless to humans.

Not harmful at all. It is an orb weaver and probably this one:
