I wish I'd gotten a good picture of its wings -- the pattern looked almost like wood grain. Hope you can tell me what it is!

Flapdoodle, I believe you're right! In looking through the Catocala varieties I've found pictures of, I would guess it is a Penitent Underwing. Now that I know that, I wish I had disturbed it a little to see what colors it was hiding.
