Is this a black widow?

Vidor, TX

This is a picture of it's back... it being alive I didn't want to try to turn it over :)

Yes, I believe a Northern Black Widow.

Yep! Be careful. They can jump up to 5 feet...they will last about 2 days in a jelly jar though. My husband tested that theory...not that it is a theory or anything.

To the best of my knowledge, Black Widows do not jump. Even the Jumping Spiders do not jump that far. There is no sense in frightening someone needlessly.

Climbing off my box and backing away slowly, hands in the air...

Not trying to frighten - or provide false information
Lived in MS and that is what we were told by the bug guy that sprayed for us. Guess I could be gullible...
