love your pictures Beahive...amazed that so many deer would be in such a populated area.We haven't much more snow than you...a change from our usual dump. JOY
Fall and Winter
Well, another one bites the um, dust? Found one of my larger (6") silver gold fish in one of the open holes in the ice. I thought at first it was the platinum koi that we worked so hard to cure of ulcers last fall, but it didn't look big enough and the dorsal was intact which wasn't the case for the koi. He lost about 1/2" of the front part of the dorsal. I had to dig out the skimmer from about a foot of snow and found several more fish there, all alive - some koi and some gold fish. I can only think it is a tad warmer in there with the deicer and a cap on it with very little ice. We had a cold snap while I was in Hawaii, in the minus' range (10-15F). I wouldn't think it would have much effect on the pond. It is about as cold as it can get down there. Come on spring!!!!!!

Has this happened with the goldfish in previous years as well?
I know you had mentioned before about the fish getting into the skimmer - it has to be warmer there. I noticed this year, my fish are all in the deeper end of my pond. Usually they are in the shallower end, but then it dawned on me that the deeper end is where the new deicer is placed. I am thinking that deicer is apparently giving off more heat than the other one.
Yup. Just not as many. Maybe one or two small ones. Now even my larger koi are in there. Of course, my 'larger' koi are only 12". Never this many.
Well we are having another January Thaw. The temperature went up to +12C.The pond is almost wide open.I can see the fish from my window moving about.Would love to go out but once again I'm under the weather. What a weird winter we are having!!
Oh Joy,
Feel better soon!
Take care Joy. It's nice you can see your fish from your window.
I took this picture today. The fish aren't visible today but they are there! I saw the Dr yesterday and I'm taking antibiotics.Still not feeling up to par.Tomorrow I go to the plastic surgeon to have the stitches from the skin cancer removal.Wish it had been a face lift! Can't find the picture I took today....will post it when I find it.JOY
I'll take the facelift too! As a matter of fact, I'll take an entire body lift!
Do you suppose we could get a group discount? Joy, your picture looks like my yard right now. But the ice is very much thinner than last year at this time, so it should melt away more quickly come spring, unless of course we are in for a bad February.
Oberon that picture of my yard was last year.JOY
Oh, I understood when it was taken. Just indicating that while this year is better for you snow wise, we are still 2-3' under. It is wierd because our temps tend to be the same roughly; I think the duration of the colder temps is what makes the difference.
