I live in zone 7b, and have a tall river birch. I would like for it to branch, and am concidering cutting it down, in hopes it will come up second growth, and be the specimen I want.
Has this been done by anyone, and what time of the year, would you cut it? Mike
making a river birch branch out
I'd advise against cutting, birches don't take it well. How old is the tree, and is it in full sun or part shade? Can you add a photo?
Resin
The tree is from 10-15 years, and has been comming up through mostly shade. I have cut out 2 trees, that has given it more sun, but at this stage of the game, it is 50 feet tall, with close limbs. I can get a picture of the siyuation tomorrow. Thanks. Mike
Resin, I am sorry, but I am not able to download a picture. Thank you for your post. Mike
OK!
The thin-ness will be due to the shade; increasing sun even more would be the best way to make it branch wider. Birches really need full sun to do well.
Resin
Thank you, It was too shaded. Mike
