I am helping the manager of a nearby park fix up their flower beds and I need suggestions for flowers that pioneers would have brought with them, particularly mormon pioneers. The park is on the site of the first town in Nevada and there is a small log cabin museum (not one of the original log cabins though.) The flower beds around the cabin are rather neglected because they only have two full time and two part time employees and they can barely keep up with mowing and cleaning and running the museum. I am not trying for complete historical accuracy but it would be nice to have some colorful flowers around the cabin that add to the historical feel and are fairly low maintenance.
Need suggestions for pioneer themed flower gardens.
BTW, the beds get morning and mid-day sun and afternoon shade and there is grass nearby that gets watered regularly so the soil is not too dry. There are already some roses in the front of the cabin and a few irises in one bed.
