Well I think it it time for a new thread. Here is a Brug that I got from Jt sessions about a month ago and it already has a bloom on it.
Tropical Gardens and Plants 108
All these pictures of shrimp boats, Sea oats and inlets are reminding me of my roots! Now I am stuck between the mountains and the coast! And I can't stand beaches that are not white like sugar!
I have not watered since the 3rd of Aug. and my tropical areas are sopping wet! I may end up loosing some more plants.I pray the humidity increases and the temps warm a little at night..Day temps are good around 90.
Nice Brug. Pensacola!
White like sugar - Siesta Key beach, one of the top 5 beaches worldwide, every year! Enough with the tour guide biz. Kay and I will torture all of you some more this winter when it's c c c cold!
Drew, you need to put those cannas down there in the soggy areas. They will suck up every bit of water they can get, and love it! Gingers do fine with wet feet, too. btw, I got a grab bag of Cannas at HD for $14.95 for 20 roots this spring.
I wish they were but no, they are growing in Aloha Hoya's garden on the Big Island of Hawaii. Carol has an amazing collection of, well, everything beautiful. I could post pictures from her garden for days. Most people go to Hawaii to relax and lounge on the beaches, I went to see plants and I wasn't disappointed. LOL
Oh, yeah! Want to go to Belize for scuba diving - and to check out the plants! Been to Coz and Cancun, too. Pretty, but ya can't live in Mexico these days. As far as a place to live that has a tropical (or in our case semi-tropical) climate, I'll take Florida over Hawaii to be honest. There's a lot more dimension to life here including the little bit of seasonal change we get.
I'm excited that one of the costus Rita sent me in April has a bud! Here's the cone of my pinecone ginger turning red, after the little flowers are done.
I stayed away from the touristy places in HI and the normal neighborhoods were very interesting to me but the cost of living there is too rich for my blood, so many of the people there are poor and what can you expect when a box of Cherrios was close to $10. Everything has to be shipped or flown in.
Those sure are some pretty gingers you showed, Alice. I'm especially fond of gingers because they seem to be so easy to grow, and exotic looking, not to mention the lovely fragrance. My Dr. Moy Hedychiums are on their 4th bloom cycle for this year, already!
This one is in a new bed I planted this spring, and it's getting a bit more sun, I think, than the others. So the flower color has washed out slightly to a silvery peach.
Another new bed I planted this spring, with the little white geiger tree, has all white flowers, but my plan has gone slightly awry, since the Peruvian Daffodils (tall foliage) have so far declined to bloom! White pentas and euphorbia are blooming happily. Not giving up hope yet, but . . . it's getting late!
Ok, Dyzz - that tears it - your flowers are gorgeous and I'm moving in next door to you!!!
mjs, nice var. Monstera.
ardesia, thanks for showing your pictures from Hawaii and I agree, the cost of living there is very high but it is the most beautiful place I've visited. I would say you had a blast visiting Carols place and I sure do miss seeing her's and Daves photos along with Tropicbreezes, from Australia.
dyzzy, you would enjoy visiting Belize. I've been there along with Cozumel and Progreso but I am yet to make it to Cancun. Nice ginger.
Drew, how is your Anthurium regale doing?
A. White Knight
Smokin! It has a new leaf developing that is about 7'' long!
I will post a picture in the am.
Excellent pictures everyone! I am enjoying these upper 80's. Maybe we can get things turned around now with some tropical humidity and temps!
I'm pooped; the garage had my name on it today.
Goodnight all!
My son and I did the garage the last two days - PHEW!
Correction; that new leaf on A. Regale is almost 10''. close to 3'' in a little over a day!
Drew, ya can't fool us - we know you were clearing out the garage to make room for more plants! Lovely variegated Philo (?) And you caught the cat before he had time to 'pose', too!
Rachel, is this guy the same or similar beastie as yours above? I got it off a bargain cart at Lowe's - no tag. I repotted it up and sunk the pot into the shady border where it promptly got over-run by ferns and caladiums. What fert should I be giving it?
Dyzz, down here you HAVE to murder critters - it's just a given that where there's heat and humidity, critters are going to thrive! It's either KILL or be eaten alive.
Morning everyone it is a cloudy day here so far but still beautiful.
Nice brug dyzzypyxxy
Thank you, James. That brug was a trade from joeswife (Debra) that arrived in April as a rooted cutting about 12" with one hand-sized set of leaves. It's now over 7ft. tall, has a second 2ft shoot, and has bloomed twice already! This one that Debra calls 'Monster White' has its second set of buds about to open, maybe tonight or tomorrow. It was an even smaller cutting in April, now 3ft. high and wide. I just love brugs.
My kids sent me a start of 'Charles Grimaldi' for Mother's Day, and it is doing fine, but has not bloomed yet. Not nearly as lusty as the other two I got as trades, despite the same care and attention. I'm sure they paid a lot for a tiny little start in a 3" pot, too - go figger.
*beaming* with pride... ( like a mother)
they look wonderful. Get ya some windex, the cheap kind and add it to your water sprayer. Cherub grew so well cuz she likes that windex stuff.
Well the crack is gone, the south front brick wing is gone, I had to pull up the cannas, cut the white with red center ROS down to an 8 inch stub, have the top halves in a water tub, pulled up two struggling Hybrid Tea roses for the guys to work there, and had to dig up the other Lavender ROS behind the brick wall, now I have a full open space in full sun to figure out what to do with. Next will be calking all around the house, then either siding or new cedar and paint. *sigh*
Everything out front was covered with dust, so been cleaning them off.
Does a tropical peach pie sound good?
Debra, I'll take a piece of that peach pie and mjs, what a cool flower on that passy.
Dyzzy, you have a very nice looking Alocasia amazonica or polly. Amazonica will have larger leaves and the growth habit bigger vs. polly. I use Osmocote and composted horse manure in my soil media for all of my Alocasias but you can also use Miracle Gro at 1/2 the labeled strength for them. Drew may know of a better fertilizer...
Drew, your regale is still looking good. Is that Alocasia watsoniana I also see? If you keep that plant growing longer than I did (6 months), I'll want to know your secret.
Local grocery store plant,of all places to find such, Alocasia bambino.
