CLOSED: CLOSED: Looks like grasshopper/cricket

New Market, TN

These have been hanging around my house the past couple weeks. I live in East Tennessee. Never expected one on my coffee cup though. Can't tell you anything about them except I sure don't like that long tail that looks like a stinger. Tried googling crickets and grasshoppers but haven't run across anything that looks like these do.

Indeed it is a meadow katydid and harmless to you. The long thing that looks like a stinger is actually an ovipositor, which is used for egg laying and indicates that it is a female. With an ovipositor that is straight and as long as this one, it must be the Straight-lanced Meadow Katydid (Conocephalus strictus). I'm not aware of others in your area that have an ovipositor that is longer than its body.

Thank you for helping me identify this as a katydid. Doesn't look so ominous now that I know what it is.
