These have been hanging around my house the past couple weeks. I live in East Tennessee. Never expected one on my coffee cup though. Can't tell you anything about them except I sure don't like that long tail that looks like a stinger. Tried googling crickets and grasshoppers but haven't run across anything that looks like these do.

Indeed it is a meadow katydid and harmless to you. The long thing that looks like a stinger is actually an ovipositor, which is used for egg laying and indicates that it is a female. With an ovipositor that is straight and as long as this one, it must be the Straight-lanced Meadow Katydid (Conocephalus strictus). I'm not aware of others in your area that have an ovipositor that is longer than its body.
