Really weird, white eyed large brown insect

Hi, the other day I was leaving to go somewhere about 6pm and noticed a plastic coated sign that had fallen down and was lying on top of some mulch in my courtyard. I picked up the sign and underneath was this large (1.5 inch?) brown, wedge shaped thing. It looked like one of those brown rubber door stops, minus the base. I didn't think it was anything alive until I noticed the white eyes with what looked like black pupils at the upper front end. This thing was all brown, but the lower end had a kind of tweedy pattern. There were no noticeable antennae or legs. If I hadn't been running late I would have gotten something to catch it. It took off somewhere. I've looked at tons of pictures and can't find anything like it. I'm in Chicago. Any ideas?
