August Bloomers!

Arlington, TX

The incarnata took over the whole flower bed and started coming up, from suckers, in the grass. I got rid of all of it, except a couple I gave to those who wanted it. But I might try one in a pot and that one is described as being shorter?

Maybe a little shorter, but you can always cut it to the length you want and it will bush out more.

I love it... I watched two fawns play in our pond this evening while their Moms stood nervously nearby.
Great photo!

Oh my! What big ears they have! LOL

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

How precious! This is something I don't get to see, living in the burbs. Thanks for sharing!

'Nacogdoches Rose' (which has been renamed 'Grandma's Yellow Rose') bloom opening in early AM sunlight
I think this rose is now the official Yellow Rose of Texas after becoming a Texas SuperStar. My plant is growing in a large whiskey barrel. When I bought it at the beginning of the summer, t was small and sick looking. Despite the heat and lack of rain, it has started to thrive.

That is just gorgeous Hazel!!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Beautiful roses!! Have you gotten any rain?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks, Josephine and Stephanietx. The blooms are not huge as they appear in the photos. I am surprised it has grown so much with this awful weather. There appeared to be some rain yesterday in the late afternoon on the east side of San Antonio; however, it didn't make it to our area. I could see the rain falling from the clouds, but it didn't get close enough for me to at least be able to smell it. Several trees have died in our neighborhood now as well as a lot of shrubs. The oaks in the field behind me are losing their leaves in abundance. I have never seen them lose so many except in the spring when they usually do, My water bill was over $350.00 even though I have no grass in my backyard. Soaking the trees and shrubs and watering the grass and other plants to save them is worth the money. I am now watering the neighbor's trees and the grass between our houses. The weird thing is that my angel trumpet blooms are smaller than usual (as are the plants); however, each bloom stays beautiful for several days instead of scorching in the heat as the blooms usually do when it's this hot.

RE: AUGUST BLOOMERS:
Thanks all for interesting pics, comments, and ideas for August bloomers. I especially will use the "umbrella" to shade my big leaf plants, which wilt so quickly.

My Scutellaria is FINALLY blooming! And my Japanese Maple that I transplanted it leafing out again. I guess it really is much happier in it's new location.

That isn't a coral honesuckle, The cape honeysuckle isn't in the same family and is much tougher.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I love C.Myrtles and those are beautiful! Mine are struggling with this heat and drought. I really need to give them some attention before they croak.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I obviously missed the notice of the bee convention! This pretty scarlet fruit passionvine is still blooming to beat the band.

Stephanie - I love your passion vine convention facilities!!!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I was out after I posted earlier and I see one bloom but even more exciting is I see some tee-ninety Gulf Fritillary cats! I saw a GF butterfly over there the other day and was hoping she found it. So Stephanie...look at leaves that have little holes and also at the new growth near the tendrils. You may have them also.

Arlington, TX

I can't get far enough away to show how many flowers these 2 plants have due to darkness but it is awesome. The smell was so strong I could detect it when I opened the back door. I have a couple fancy purple blooming tonight as well.

Nice Cheryl! Don't you wish the blooms lasted all day?! I had to cut my largest datura back (dog path) but it is still going to bloom soon. It is one of the few things that loves our sun.
Also got this pic of the Cup Flower just beginning to bloom...new plant for me this year from Dale (lepfarmer) at RU. I am loving that it is doing well in our heat.

Beautiful Datura Cheryl, see? you still have something to rejoice about.

Cheryl, your datura is very prolific! One of my neighbors has them and they've been loaded with blooms!

Sheila, that's a neat little plant!

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

My "nudie ruellias" (ruellia nudiflora) have started blooming. LOVE these!! I got these from Josephine at the spring RU in Arlington this year.

Sheila, thank you for the link about the plant, it is very pretty, I looked to see if it is native to Texas, but it is not, although it is native to many other states. http://wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=SIPE2

Stephanie I am glad you like the Ruellia nudiflora, we love it too, and it sure can take the heat like a champ.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, I had looked up the cup flower when he offered it on trades. I think it will work fine for the back fence, seems to like the amount of sun it is getting.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

How tall does the Cutleaf Coneflower get? I need to find a good place for it.

Your D Willow has a beautiful color bloom....nice.
Jo... The rudbeckia 'herbstonne' gets 5-6 foot tall here in partial sun. I bet it would do better in full sun, but here it is with Ironweed.

Very pretty Sheila, I will give it a good home.
