14 day composting barrel

Chillicothe, OH(Zone 5a)

If anyone has the 14 day composting barrel would you please email me. My husband plans to make a vey large one (app. 4' in diameter by 6' long) because we need large amounts of compost fast. I'm sure this metheod can't be as good as the long term way but it's got to be better than nothing. Our main questions are how many baffels are in the one you have(he can figure out how many ours should have from that) and what are the instructions for the composting such as how often do you turn it,what do you put in it ect.? A question for everyone is; can you make compost in the winter in zone 5?

I have one...It's a barrel that rolls. I think part of the recipe is the green to brown ratio and the constant daily turning. Works well!

Deanne, could you post instructions? Or is it one you bought? Thanks! :)

It is called a compost tumbler that we bought. Pretty costly at around $400.00. Works well with 3 parts green stuff and 1 part brown. Does make compost in 14 days, or if you forget to tumble, 3 or more weeks. When you open the door you feel the heat and see the steam rise. It's cool!

We have the conventional composting bins. Then I read about just putting the stuff on the garden bed and covering it over with soi.

The conventional comsposting bins have been 'cooking' for a about 9 months now, we made a mistake of putting too many twiggs and they have not broken down very well.

The garden bed I set aside as a compsot heap has done fantastically well. I have the most wonderful soil in the one bed I tried this method. I made 6 'veggie' beds about 5 feet by 5 feet, all hardpacked clay, and I set aside one of them as the 'compost bed'. I dug under the hard packed clay, dumped my icecream bucket of kitchen scraps, covered it over with clay, keep doing that to the whole bed till eventually the whole bed was covered in kitchen scraps & clay. 8 weeks later I had wonderful soil!!

I am going to keep on doing this to all my 6 garden veggie beds till I have lovely 'garden gold'. Seems to me was quicker than the compost bins.
