CLOSED: Unknown Small Moth

Olcott, NY

I have never seen one of these before.. It almost resembles a Brown-tailed Moth, but I don't know if that species has black spots on its abdomen.

Identification assistance would be most appreciated.

Kind regards,

Jonathan

I believe it is a Estigmene acrea - Salt Marsh Moth

(Zone 7a)

Possibly Virginian Tiger Moth, Spilosoma virginica?

You could be right kwanjin.
Both the moths suggested have the same Family Erebidae, same Subfamily Arctiinae - Tiger and Lichen Moths, same Tribe Arctiini - Tiger Moths, and same Subtribe Spilosomina,.......just different genus and species and I will not argue the species level due to the fact that there can be very subtle differences between the numerous species only discernible by qualified entomologist.

I have seen them in pure butterfly form, I think. Do they appear to be little white butterflies with a small spot on each wing? And do they do damage?
