Beetle ID

Rockford, IL

I found this beetle crawling through the lab where I work. He's about an inch long.

There is a chance that he's the result of some sort of genetic mutation... Is it safe to have him in the lab or should I release him outside?

I think this is a Pendunculate Ground Beetle. Scarites subterraneus. From what I'm reading, they make good pets and don't bite very hard. I wouldn't count on that, though.
