When cleaning my deck this rolled out on the floor. One half was moving (the pointed end, back and forth) but no legs or eyes seen. The other half was sort of hard like a shell. It's the length and width of my little finger. As far as I could tell it hadn't attached itself to anything. If it's a chrysalis can you tell what kind of butterfly it could be? I put it under a rose bush last night but it isn't moving anymore. Is it dead or in metamorphosis? What should I do with it?
I'll load a second image...
CLOSED: Is this a cocoon or chrysalis or what?
Yes, it's a butterfly or moth chrysalis. I don't know which one but someone will come along will.

it is a moth cocoon. Bury it under about 1" of loose soil. Looks like Tersa Sphinx Moth but not 100% sure. Do you have Pentas growing??
You could also keep it in a open jar with loose dirt in a cage to see when it hatches
Just a couple pentas in hanging baskets. I'll do what you recommend. Thanks.
