mum seed?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

As most of you know, we have a garden center. We also have a bunny (yes, real live rabbit) that sits on the counter. She loves to get petted by all the customers. Sometimes she leaves little "bunny surprises" on the counter. Steve our helper and DH play "marbles" with them. (no, they ain't right) This one day, a "pellet" landed in the middle of a mum flower. Well, before I had a chance to knock it out of the way, a customer came in. (I didn't want to explain about the "marbles" and the "bunny surprises")so I left it there. Well, she was looking at the mum and noticed this "seed" in the bloom. She said "Oh, is this a mum seed?", and started squishing it around in her fingers. She wanted to know if it would grow if she planted it and if she could have it. I said "go ahead and keep it." She wrapped it carefully in a tissue that I gave her. She was just tickled and said she always got the neatest things from us. The two men did a fine job of keeping a straight face through it all, but I must admit I was about to die trying not to laugh.

ROTFLMFBO!!!!! Oh, my GOSH! That is so funny!!!!!

St. Thomas, ON(Zone 5b)

I don't know how you carried it off, I would have had to make some excuse to leave, to regain my composure. That is to funny.

Auburn, NY(Zone 5b)

Hey...maybe you can package them! My DH is always saying if something is on sale I will buy it. That is so funny

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

Hmmm, not exactly poo pets, but an interesting take on floricultutre for sure!!!!!!!!!! Wonder what'll come up...

Auburn, NY(Zone 5b)

wouldn't it be funny if there was a seed inside the "marble"and something really great sprouted from this "seed"?

Harford County, MD(Zone 6b)

Hey, this would have made a great "Candid Camera". You'd better think up a good answer for her if she comes back next year and tells you it didn't grow...I would love to be there, LOL..

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I could say "Oh, you know how mums are. They need three different chill periods to sprout. Did you do that? That must be what went wrong. Would you like another seed? Here take this one, I have lots of them. Now you be sure to freeze it and thaw it three cycles."

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

ROTF!! Was it you who fed the rabbits leftover tomatoes and found tomato seedlings growing all over the flower bed where the rabbit pellets were used as fertilizer? Who was it that posted that, and in which forum? Anyone remember? I howled at that!!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Just wait until a photo of that "mum seed" shows up on some gardening forum along with a request for how to germinate it!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

GW
It weren't me, I don't feed the rabbit tomatoes, makes the "seeds" too soft for the boys to play with, lol.
Anyhow, we've had to move the bunny into the green house for the winter; Little thing was shivering yesterday. Dadblame little critter done gone and ate the tops off my perennials I had growing. I was starting them for trades in the spring, guess they will be "dwarf" perennials.

Cala, you might even start a "Free Sample" box, then if anyone complains about the "slow" germination you could tell them "you got what you paid for" or that they were last years seeds, have another!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Azalea
Oh, you're a mess!!! I might just do that, or should I say do-do?

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Yes, I guess I have sort of a sick sense of humor! my DH say's that's one readon he married me, cause I made him laugh. Maybe that's part of the reason we've stayed married this 39 years - he makes me laugh too!

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

You could bag up the marbles and give them as bonus plant food free with any purchase, and you have a goodwill offering that is useful.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Bump (for MaryE). LOL

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

I never could have kept a straight face through this. You might say this is a berry funny tail. I missed seeing this until now, thanks for finding it for me Kim, and getting it up to the top so more people can get to enjoy it too.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

This thing is just as funny to me now as it was last fall, should really be on the jokes & chat forum.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I missed this the first time around. What a hoot. I would have wet my pants laughing. Glad this was brought back to the top.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

I just came across this and must say it gave me one good laugh. I have no idea how you could manage to tell her that she could have it. I would have died laughing so hard I couldn't have said anything to her........ROTFLMBO

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Y'all wouldn't believe some of the tales we could tell about our customers. We have people that ask if they plant the whole tray, plastic and all. One lady yesterday asked if the Mandevillas were hardy, I said no, then she asked if I had any hardy ones!! She said "how about those over there, are they hardy?" I kept trying to explain to her that there wasn't a particular reason for 2 sections of mandevillas except we didn't have room for them all in one place and that they were all TROPICAL.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, Cala, I bet you could write a great book about life at the garden center. You sometimes wonder if people just work at being stupid.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Heres one from today: This lady(really nerve grating personality type) had been looking around for about an hour. She came over to me at the cash register and said "Are you open" and I thought maybe she was ready to check out, but she just wanted to know if we were open!! Duh, what's that 4 letter sign on the door? O-P-E-N

"down the Shore", NJ(Zone 7a)

That was really "LOL" funny! Bumping again!!

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

Oh brilliant Pardancanda!!! Thanks for bumping :)
That is just soooooooooooo funny Cala.
How you all kept straight faces is a miracle ROFLOL

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

to funny all the stories are to funny!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

If you move to Texas, are you bringing your bunny with you? I'll have to come see you just to see the bunny that lays 'mum seeds'!! :~)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Smockette, unfortunately this little bunny ate a brug leaf in the spring. She was dead when I found her. She could come out in the garden with me when I was there and I tried very hard to keep her away from the brug plants, she just kept going back and nibbling on them. It's very odd for a bunny to eat something that they know is bad for themselves.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Awwwww, I didn't know she died. :(

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

Cala, at least there are little bunny tail chrysanthemums out there in the world to remember her by!

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Aww. Cala, too sad about your bunny.

The wild ones here eat poisonous plants too. At least once a week I will see a wild 'un chewing on a poisonous plant (castor bean, daffodil, tomato plant, you name it). I can't figure it out: shouldn't they know?

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Makes me wonder how many critters are dead in the woods after nibbling my castor beans back repeatedly. Unfortunately, the grasshoppers suffer no such fate.

Cala, I am so sorry about the bunny's demise. It really is strange that she would eat a plant that was toxic to her. We always assume that animals have a sense about that, but I guess it's not infallible.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Bumping thread for newer members to enjoy.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

That's worth a bump! thanks, GW. I printed the story for my daughter - she has a bunny "Oreo" - a Dutch black and white, if you know bunnies. He leaves "seeds" all over the place. It sure surprises me how smart they are. If she leaves him in his cage too long and then lets him out at night, I can pet him and he's good. If she picks him up and pets him, he bites her! When she gets up in the morning, she talks to him and if she doesn't and goes right to the bathroom to get ready for work, he follows her in and jumps up on her leg until she talks to him. What a character!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, that's funny! I had guinea pigs when I was little, but never any rabbits. They're such neat animals.
