The other thread was much too long! We came from http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1186150/
Edibles '11 chapter 2
What "Staples" do you Keep on Hand ???
canned mushrooms
canned white tuna (the "light tuna" has become so mushy)
dark olives
pasta sauce
canned soup (despite the egregious sodium content)
canned, crushed pineapple (it's packed in its own juice, no sugar added, and it goes with poultry,
and adds zip to a salad; not as high in carbs as you might think,
since a small amount is all that's needed).
all-natural peanut butter
salsa (yes, the jar stuff is not as good as homemade, but if you're tired...)
.
I cant can anything that is not acidic or pickled as I dont have a pressure cooker. I can: Salsa, Tomatoes, Beets, Relish and Hot Peppers.
This year I am thinking I will freeze as I still have a freezer, that has been sitting in the box now for what? 3 years?
Albacore Tuna, Spam, canned soups, veggies and some fruits. Lots of macaroni, spaghetti and rice. Always keep a spare of: Flower, sugar and condiments.
I try to keep enough in stock to be able to feed Jim and I for a month, if push comes to shove.
5 years been contimplating buying a Peacock !
A peacock ?
Not sure I understand, other than they are beautiful...and very loud vocally.
They attack and eat husbands when push comes to shove.
Picked the first cuke & a handful of beans, plus 3 small maters from the garden....am eating son's blueberries. Staples? Baked beans, soup, tuna, pasta, kidney beans, rice, olives.....I won't starve, but the combos may be strange.
Ahh, the first cuke...sweet memories.
Enjoy your son's homegrown blueberries, a gift from the heavens!
They are on the farm....5,000 bushes, twelve varieties.....not really home grown, but at least they are free.
Picked a ton of green beans today....also a mini zuke....hate the really large ones, cannot use them up, so I tried a mini variety, & am very pleased with the size......
Cool! The blackberries are almost ready!
I will have some in a few weeks unless the catbird gets to them first.....
Gave away two cukes and two ears of corn to young man selling magazines and books. He said that he was from Opelika, AL trying to earn enough points to get money for college. I feel sorry for the young people that work this "program". I am sure that they are being taken advantage of by the promoters. I budget $50 a month for "charity" and that is how much the magazine subscription came to - exactly. Have to catch up with the cat groups I support next month. . . He really wanted my blackberries but none of them were ripe yet. :(
Cool!
Pies coming up! You are very nice, Memory....I wouldn't answer the door!
Very nice, Yank. I have had steady charities since I first started making money.
A lot of people think that charity has to be a large financial gesture, so they procrastinate about donating.
The trick is to incorporate *tiny* actions/resources on a daily basis, and it gets easier and easier as the mind (and the subconscious) learns to redirect resources to a higher and greater use for those who need it.
Came home from picking up the kids from VBS and there was a basket of tomatoes and zucchini on my stoop(from my next door neighbor)
Everyone, march on !!!
Glory to those who are generous !
I have green tomatoes - but nothing even close to ripe.
They kind of look like the heart-shaped tomatoes that my portugese neighbors gave me plants for.
They look like ox hearts....I have grown yellow & orange ox hearts.....
looks like you have some more branches to cut off sherrie - i had to do a few the other day too
When mine get ripe I will post a pic and maybe they are Ox hearts, too.
the early evening or morning - with this humidity the fungus is growing very fast - i would spray again too at least once a week.
just do not want to read about you jumping off a bridge:)
