This was a small variety, probably not a Chinese Praying Mantis (or maybe a male of that species?)
Anyone know what kind this is?

That is probably a male Chinese Mantis nymph. Might not even be pre-sub-adult.
Or possibly a Stagmomantis - http://www.austinbug.com/survey/2011/pics/11-17-11mantis.jpg
This mantis does not look like a Stagmomantis species. Chinese Mantids seem to be more common than Narrow Winged Mantids in America.
