Can someone please identify this? I am assuming that it's a nest of some sort and it was found in Southern Maryland. Thank you.

Hard to tell but it may be a Mantid nest. Can you show it from the side?
Sure looks like a typical Mantis egg case commonly seen locally.
I agree with you greenthumb99, and at this time of year it would be empty. The mantis nymphs having hatched in spring.
Brought one such case inside when I was quite young. It hatched out on a Sunday morning; about a hundred minature mantises all over my room as we were about to leave for church. :-0
Thank you all so much! This is the only picture that I have. It's in a friend's yard and she was stung very badly by something unknown and didn't want to get too close to it until she knew what it was. Thanks again!
