Size: 1mm in length
Features: Slender bodies, with several segments, and wings.
Behavior: These insects jump/fly small distances and bite (at night the biting is far far more frequent).
Location: They have heavily infested our carpets and rugs in our home, and apparently our blankets because we haven't been sleeping in our bed since we started noticing the problem.
Full story:
We originally saw these insects (or something similar looking) in our large raspberry patch, but thought nothing of an outdoor bug.
A small rug near the back door became infested with some unknown insect (we never caught any) that bit the heck out of our legs anytime we stood on or near it.
Within a week we started feeling bites throughout the house, especially in specific locations (like near my wife's desk -- the main destinations of any of the raspberries we picked… still not sure if they are connected or merely similar).
We have very clearly seem the small translucent bugs turn red while biting us (while we captured them with tape). At first these bites weren't too bad, but as time passes the bites seem to hurt worse and itch more.
So far the information we have found online has been conflicting when it comes to identifying the insect and its behaviors. And reference images of insects online very rather widely so that it resembles many different insects, but then the descriptions of behavior haven't made sense.
For example, some images of Thrips make sense for the insects found on our berries and they will bite humans, however they do not feed on blood. Lice on the other hand do NOT have wings and cannot jump/fly.
Thanks in advance for any help IDing these guys so we can work on extirpating them properly and safely.
Tiny Biting Insect
These are thrips; their bites are best described as annoying but not dangerous. You also could be being bitten by something other than thrips as well.
