texans...Bluebonnet question

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

I received a wonderful Mothers Day gift from my daughter in Houston last year. It was a picture of her sitting in a field of bluebonnets, a package of bluebonnet seeds and a pressed flower sun catcher with a bluebonnet in it. I planted the bluebonnets and they germinated and got about three inches high and then the heat got to them and they died. If I planted some now in the fall, would they be viable and germinate in the early spring here in Indiana? I will try to find some seeds and get them in, if this would be the time to plant. Thanks, Lou

Lou, they would germinate, but probably won't bloom until early summer for you because of the temperature difference.

Oh,they're beautiful,aren't they?

I'd hold off 'til spring to be safe,Dispatcher1' This was my first year and the bunnies ate most of them but still have a couple,no seeds yet though' Sis'

I started bluebonnets indoors winter of 1999 and planted them out last spring. This spring, I was delighted to see taht they'd reseeded! I am collecting seed from the few pods and will probably start some and add them to whatever reseeds itself this coming spring. :O)

Fall is the time to plant Bluebonnets. They overwinter and come up in the spring before it gets too hot. They need the cold treatment to germinate the best.

Thanks GW'
We couldn't do it here as they would rot. Think I might try GW's technique'

Yep, there really is a red bluebonnet! http://www.wildseedfarms.com/maroon_bluebonnet.html The legend goes that they were first found growing on the riverbank next to the Alamo ~ they had been stained red by the blood of those who gave their lives there.
