I've heard alot about feeding maggots to chickens and since I've been in a constant search for more natural feed I've found a way to get maggots without alot of mess. A little meat and this fly catcher jar is set in the sun for 2 days. The flies get into the jar, lay their eggs and then can't get back out and die...more feed for the chickens. After the first 2 days in the sun i put the jar in the shade for a few more days (othrerwise the meat gets dry) until I can see the maggies getting bigger. Then just dump the whole thing into a feeding tray and the hens go crazy!!! Sounds like a weird recipe doesn't it? Can't get more natural protein than that.
Maggots for chicken feed
Iowa, that cracks me up. I do something very similiar except I put the fly jar in the coop and that way I eliminate the flies in the coop and create food for the girls...Way to go...P.S. I also put a small teaspoon of Soy Sauce on the meat to help keep it moist...works pretty good...Hay
LOL! It cracks my family up too...they think I'm crazy! I think it's nature at its best.
Oh yeah! I'm sure it's like caviar! LOL I love it when I can do things like that for my girls.. :) Great idea both of you!
