Lucy has a weird growth

(Ang) Bremerton, WA(Zone 8b)

A seller on ebay had a lot of 15 cactus and 5 epi cuttings on ebay for a really good price ($5 plus shipping.) One of the Epi cuttings, labeled as Lucy, arrived with a bump and since it's begun to charge as the cutting has started taking root. Now I recognize the air roots but what is exactly is the growth they are on? Leaf? It looks a bit different from my David W Grant that has begun growing new growth.

This is not unusual at all as these plants often have spikes, nubs, and bridges between leaves. If it grows out and you don/t like the looks of it, cut it off (6 inch lengths or more) and put it in water to root. My Strictum just did this on the end of every limb and I broke all of them off when they got to be around 6" and have rooted them for friends. You'll find that there are many different growth patterns shown as you increase your collection. This is one of the things that I enjoy most about growing them. bob

Thank you for answering my question Bob. All of my cuttings have rooted and is starting to redevelop growth of some sort. I think this lady's was the only one that threw me off.

That is a beautiful bloom! That's not the strictum is it?

Its just sprouting another leaf from the tip of it, that happens to have aerial roots. If you leave it connected, it will grow into another leaf. Many people debate wether its ok to cut off the aerial roots or not. It happens in the wild, and helps them to cling to the trees that they naturally grow in. If you really dont like them, cut them off, but, its a natural thing it would do in the wild, and kind of cool looking in my opinion.

I like the growths too unless size has become a problem. They definitely ad character to your plant. The picture in prior post was of Wild Thing which has bloomed twice now and has a rapid growth habit. The picture below is Mor Mor which I would recommend to any grower. bob

I'll definitely be leaving it, I think it's cute and I like the aerial roots. I just noticed yesterday that at the tip of the growth there is a leaf growing that is more familiar to me. I also discovered that they like it by the patio door better. It's south facing but doesn't get direct sun in Summer but does get a very bright light. Every cutting seems to be putting out growth.

Both are quite beautiful. I like how Mor Mor is elegant looking while Wild Thing is flashy but not over the top.

Bob, Love Mor Mor! Wish I had room for more!
