I recently found that I have a small infestation of magnolia scale on my Ann magnolia. It's a fairly small tree so I would really prefer to keep the problem branch. However, I don't want to use pesticides. Does anyone know if scraping off the buggies and clearing out the mulch, compost, leaf litter etc. beneath the tree will work or would it be best to just remove the branch along with clearing the material beneath the tree?
I will replace the removed mulch with clean pine bark mulch to within 3 inches of the main trunks and will have a tapered layer of mulch beneath the tree.
Any feedback is helpful...especially if you've had to address this issue.
I'm in northern Illinois Zone 5.
Thanks

This says to use a summer oil now and a dormant oil in the winter.
Thanks for the information. Looks like it's time for me to use the dormant oil. I hope this works as this is one of my favorite trees.
