Our Bradford Pear provides lots of nice shade for the kids hanging out front and the cars. We hate to take it down but its getting so large and every storm I wonder how much longer it will stay in one piece. We planted it 15 years ago and have always had it thined and well cared for. So we are thinking of replacing with a Upright Japanese Red Maple tree. The guy that will be taking this tree down suggested the color may look nice with the white house. We saw two at his nursery and took a few pictures of them but really thinking one should have a more upright look and kinda like the lolly pop look more then the spreading umbrella look. We can only remove on this year so the front one will be the first to go. Its so tough as the tree is so nice a big now but at the same time seems over welming to the house. Any sugguestions?
What else can I plant here? Removing one Bradford Pear..
While the Japanese Maple (bloodgood) and its maroon/rust color would look neat near your house, I would check into whether that maple tree's leaves won't burn-up to a crisp if it gets too many hours of direct sunlight. Otherwise it would look beautiful near your house.
jess;
What size and shape do you want the replacement to be?
Is the soil sandy or clay?
Do you want flowers or nice foliage?
Well Ive had a tought time desiding if I wanted a flowering tree like a Kousa dogwood or the red maple. I think I want a more up right one not one that spreads across the yard. I like the shade of our Bradford Pear so this is not a easy desion.
Downy serviceberry looks good as does witch hazel. Neither will get terribly tall. A redbud would also look nice.
May I suggest a mighty oak tree?
