Ugly! Karen was over today, & she found a cicada shell on my JM!
Garden pests
We think it was one of the beetles causing destruction in the forest. No threat now. :)
Asian Long Horned Beetle?
http://cisr.ucr.edu/images/long_horned_beetle/asian_long_horned_beetle_01.jpg
We saw one of those on the road by the lake the same day we saw the solid black one. Hank stepped on the ALB on our walk. I like having good pests, but those that destroy whole species of trees don't get my "welcome" sign!!
louise if you saw a asian long horned beetle you need to report it. they leave drill holes in the sides of hardwood trees.
Also the Emerald Ash Beetle.....purple sticky traps are up all over Litchfield County......
Our tiny flowering cherry that was chewed up grew leaves again, then it got chewed yet again. We surrounded it with wire fence in case the outlaw rhodent is a porcupine or ground hog. If mice can do that kind of damage, it's still a gonner.
Even though I watered in grub killer in spring, twice, I am still finding signs of Japanese beetles,( sigh). Perhaps it would have been worse. It must be true that repeated applications are necessary.
Woodchucks...I loathe woodchucks. Tom and I bought two of the largest hav a heart traps, and poison peanuts...captured the baby, released it...momma is no where in sight, or smell.
I left the trap out to see if I could possibly capture mom...I ended up catching PePe instead...that was a heart racing ordeal. Skunk was released in the same area as the wood chuck.
The wood chucks dug down between the sewer vents (J shaped pipes) under the foundation, and into the basement
Good grief!
Meaningful post above, huh?! Sorry about that. Wanted to say hi to Thom. Too much excitement around me. My son was opening his birthday presents and I set my phone down so as not to be rude. Lol
Hope he got everything he wanted, Louise! Is he a gardener as well?
Thanks, Marilyn. Yes,he had a really nice birthday, and he is starting to really enjoy having plants around his yard. He also loves growing a few vegetables and serving them to us. :)
See? All our hard work, parenting in the garden, helped! I'm sure Garret absorbed many things as we gardened together.....now he's got his 3 little ones "helping".
still have not caught the groundhog or any of the rabbits - good think i have a separate cuke batch up by the house - they seem to like cuke plants the best
Gross!!!
bugs, bugs, bugs and more bugs!! We have a ton of yellow soft bodied chewing machines which started on the green beans and now have made their way over to the cukes and squashes. They suck the leaves dry. Been squishing for weeks now!! I usually just hand-pick the bugs but I think we are going to have to spray with something...
Whoa!!! That'a a lot of JB's...ever look into doing Milky Spore?
I have a few JBs....that amount is scary! Sue, that sounds like the Mexican Bean Beetle......
I think your right ROBINDOG. Any suggestions of spray that won't hurt the bees?
We've had literarly over 150 hornworms that we picked off our south-facing garden. There are 20 tomato plants and thankfully my daughter and DH has been helping pick them off. As each of us finds one we call out the number of hornworms found! Now, the westerly garden has 3 tomato plants (different variety) and hasn't had one hornworm yet!
Sorry, Sue.....I know Monterey Garden's spray with Spinosad is not a very harmful spray, but it does affect bees, so I wouldn't recommend using it in a veggie garden.
I found one yesterday with many white eggs on it's back....he's gone!
Ya you leave them when you find those white eggs on it....nasty as it is!!!!
Found an adult H.Worm and a baby today. :(
I knew he would die a slow death, so the garden scissors helped things along.......
ewwwwww
my wife called and said she just chased a rabbit across the yard who was eating our cuke plants - that would have been funny to see:) - she is really hot about them eating the cukes and squash - wants them to be swimming with the fishes asap
Poor little bunnies. Red Sox fans are vicious. ^_^
I wish someone would breed a line of cats that were first, sterile...lol...and large enough to take down woodchucks...and had a 100% homing instict...and would be preprogrammed to just go after rodents/rabbits...
Should I forward that to the pet forum? lol
Just ask the South Koreans!!
Remember the orange eggs in post 8691471? I was brousing the different states' extension services and learned they are probably "squash beetles" though that must be no surprise considering where they were. They warned to wash them off with detergent and dispose the minute you see them because they spread quickly.
