I was trying to get a pic of a weird looking sparrow (not the one in the pic) when this pretty red-bellied woodpecker showed up. I couldn't resist attempting to take a pic of it. However, in the pic, it seems to have yellow above its bill and doesn't have a red-belly. Is it just youthful? There has been another one around that has no red on its head at all. I thought juvi female but maybe its a female golden? Should I spend time staring out the window looking for them? Golden-fronted woodpeckers are usually found a bit west of here but then so is the painted bunting that's been here this week.
What do you think?
CLOSED: Golden-fronted Woodpecker?
Here's a very bad pic of the one with no color on her head. I looked at her through the binocs as she chased away a sparrow. The top of her head almost looks like it has a gray cap. I was charging my camera batteries, so by the time I was ready, I only got this eye-straining shot before she flew off. Couldn't tell if she had yellow at the base of her bill. I suppose they could both be juvis red-bellieds?
Sure looks like a Golden-fronted to me Elphaba.
Yep, I'd agree with G-fW, though a hybrid is also possible (not sure how one would tell for sure, have to check up). And a leucistic House Sparrow.

OMG! That's just too exciting. Finally, a new backyard bird! This has been a really interesting week for June. Thanks for your help.
Checked up - it is actually a hybrid (Sibley: "Red-bellied and Golden-fronted hybridize where their ranges overlap in Texas and Oklahoma"). Golden-fronted has solid black central tail feathers and a pure white rump; Red-bellied has both central tail feathers and rump white with a little black barring; this bird is intermediate, with a heavily black-barred tail.

Fascinating. Thanks for checking on it.
