I would like some help identifying this insect, which I think is some sort of hornet.
I shot this photo in the South of France, but it does not look like an European Hornet.
Any idea what it could be? The insect was quite huge, maybe twice the size of an honeybee (in the photo it's sitting on a thistle flower).

it's locks like Scoliidae family.
Thank you! Googling a little bit it appears to be a Colpa sexmaculata
