My little girl and found this digging in the garden today and would like to identify it. Its about 2 1/2" long and has big, strong mandibles. Any help would be great, thanks.
Found diging in the garden
it may be a grub, the larvae of a beetle. grubs usually feed on plant roots (some species prefer grass roots which can lead to yellow dead spots in a lawn). if your garden/yard doesn't have large dead yellow patches or random dead plants that died for seemingly no reason, then you probably don't have to worry about an overpopulation of the grubs.
the following is a link to information about the beetle groups that produce grub larvae: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarabaeoidea
Almost impossible to ID a grub before it pupates, and emerges.
If you can keep it around that long, then we might be able to help lol.
