Hi All,
I'm new to the Aroids (actually had to look up the meaning of Aroids to figure out if this is where I should post this message). I had picked up some amorphophallus bulbifer seeds from Rare Exotic Seeds, because they looked pretty and sounded interesting. I'm really new to gardening in general, but wanted to play with interesting plants, not the same plants I see everywhere.
So I planted half of my seeds in a pot, in a ziploc, as I think those were the directions given on the website. That was on May 25th. The other half of the seeds (5 of them) I decided to germinate using the paper towel and ziploc baggy method. Three of those had started sprouting roots by June 2nd and were potted up. The other two are still in paper towels and ziploc. They looked like they might not have been good though.
I just took a look today to make sure that the first 5 that were put directly into a pot were still moist. And I discovered they had started to push through the soil surface! I'm so excited! Now I need to go back and read again about when I need to move them and whatnot.
Just wanted to share with you all. =)
Amorphophallus Bulbifer
Good luck with them. Remember, with A. bulbifer you'll get bulblets on the leaf which will produce a new plant. I've found I get 8 to 10 bulblets per plant. A few years and you'll have a whole big plantation of them.
I think that was one of the things I had read about them when I was first looking at ordering. I am fascinated by those plants that reproduce in that manner. It's exciting. And I'll only end up with that plantation if I figure out a way to keep their humidity up outside. I'm having fun playing with a variety of seeds right now, marveling over how nature works. =)
I have the mother tuber plus 32 small ones now after only 2 seasons.
Arithmetic progression: 1 ...... 10..... 33 ....... ? ....... ? ...... ?
Season 6 could end up quite a big number (something around 900?).
tropicbreeze - I was telling my husband about your progression after two seasons. He thinks maybe I am crazy. But that's okay, because that sounds like free plants to me. =)
