Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Well our sweet Chickopea did it again! This will be her 3rd setting of eggs this year. She hatched out 2 babies last night. One is a precious tiny yellow piece of Fluff, a Serama and a absolutely Gorgeous Half Cochin half Serama who is all black with white tips on its wings!

There are 4 more eggs in the nest , 3 Serama and 1 Cochin. We will wait for a couple more days to see what happens.

That Copper Jack, just looks like he should be wearing six guns...So whats in a name? Just sounds like the bad boy's in town again...Don't believe me? Just ask the girls...LOL...Your babies are so cute...Hay

What color is Chickopea? I am very challenged when it comes to identifying chicken colors, especially from written descriptions. Possibly because few of mine are purebred, leaving the colors non-pure as well?

Pork Pal, She loves her bowl and I think she feels safe in it! I had to remove her ,chicks and eggs though because our temps got up to 103 . I was afraid that they wouldnt be able to get enough fresh air in it.
Haystack I named old CopperJack after the man who actually raised his parents. I got Copper and his brother Carrot from a dear friend in my Atlanta Poultry Meetup group. We traded baby boys when they were very young so as to keep new "good" blood in our stock. I got a great trade.
Copper's tail is a lot shorter right now than usual, he was caught by a dog and the feathers were ripped out and he was mauled very badly. I grabbed him up and checked him for open wounds, there were none, so I placed him in a "safe house"for a couple of weeks while he recouped and grew in his tail. He is all better now and as you can see he can still produce offspring but it was a touch and go for a while. His tail still is very short buts its growing. None of this affected his "Strut" though! LOL!
Oh Yes the dog problem was handled too!
Catmad Im not sure what the coloration on Chickopea would be called, I just say Buff with black tail tips. With Seramas its the pld " Box of Chocolate" routine, You never know what 'cha gonna get! But thats why I love the waiting on new babiies, I love the guessing game!

Oh and no new babies as of this morning.

Your a lady after my own heart. I love the colors and guessing game as well. There will never be anything quite like the Seramas for me. I sure hope Chickopea does well and has an opportunity to raise some of her babies this time...Hay

there is nothing like it! I really was surprised to find the cochin eggs fertile too! After my cochin roo Iroh got killed ,the hen didnt really seem to take up with anyone but Copperjack , He is soooo small though so I was amazed that this baby made it!
"Shimmy" and "Buckshot" ( named so because Im going to guess little roo so reverse psycology might work with Serama baby) are out of nest and eating and drinking really well. Hmmmm Shimmy is so much bigger than buckshot, I was hoping it would be tiny............uh wait a minute....................

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

Run, little rooster, RUN!!!

Eufala, ya can't yell at just him, takes two, ya know.....

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Oh well I got what I got and I just love 'em! Little Shimmy is just precious , I really dont care who the Dad is. Chickopea is in hog heaven about her babies. The other eggs did not make it, so two is all we have but that is great!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

That is just toooo funny Eufaula!!!

I always crack up when I cook an egg from my huge girls and find out it's fertile.. All I have in with them is a couple serama roos and a couple bantam lavenders that are really small.. I'm always thinking.. "nice try guyz" LOL

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Thought Id give you an update on "Buckshot" and "Shiimy"! Here they are last week

Thumbnail by Eufaula
Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Here they are today, after a rain storm and of course they both headed for the muddiest place they could find! "Buckshot is now becoming very "Splashy". Its coloration is going to be beautiful. Still dont know if its a boy or girl but just look at that attitude!!!
Shimmy is still showing signs of both parents Cochin and Silkie, no comb yet either. Both are still pretty small and dependent on Mama Chickopea but are doing really well.

That is a winning baby!!! Love it!!! Wow! Look at that chest and Super great vertical wing!! Awesome!

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

ZZ you just dont know the half of it !!LOL! This little character is already trying to rule the roost around here. Its only approximately 3 inches tall when upright and it lets everybody know who gets to eat first!!
So Im guessing its aggressiveness must be male. Oh me! another Roo, That will make 4 Serama Roos and only 5 Hens. So far everyone has their territory and are doing just fine, but we will see! The Cochins Bantams are free ranging along side the bantams and they get along well, but they are still young. My Blue/Black baby Male just started crowing this weekend......so we will see how long the congeniality lasts!
