CLOSED: Please help me identify this wild bird in southeast PA

West Chester, PA

I know it's not a particularly exciting bird but this species practically live at my bird feeder. I've been able to identify all the others that come to the feeder but I haven't narrowed this one down browsing pictures on the Web and I don't know anyone who knows anything about wild birds. I took a short video since I can't get a clear picture through the feeder-->http://s126.photobucket.com/albums/p112/krusarinn/?action=view¤t=2011-06-04_12-39-42_665.mp4

Thanks so much in advance!

Hi Jade, The size and color are hard to judge here from the video but I was thinking possibly Tufted Titmouse.

Pelletory, thank you sooo much! This is the closest I've gotten so far and I can't believe I got a response this fast!

I looked up pictures of the tufted titmouse and it's incredibly similar, but this one doesn't seem to have the little tuft on his head. Other than that, it's a perfect match. Sorry about the video but it didn't come out all that well. I had to take it through the feeder, which is one of those that's inset into a window. His head, wings, and tail are a medium gray, and his belly is white with a tinge of rust color beneath the wings. His eyes and beak are black, and the area just around his eyes is white or a lighter gray. Not what I'd call a "ring," but just a graduated coloring from the gray on his head and toward his eyes. He seems particular about his food and will peck around until he finds what he's looking for in the seed mixture. I don't know if that's unusual in wild birds because I'm better with the tame ones, but other birds often just fly up to the feeder, grab a random seed, then fly away, so I thought that might be significant. This one will spend three to five minutes sorting through the mixture to find the seeds he likes, and with some of them, he'll take them onto the perch and peck at them with his beak to open them, then go get another.

Sorry if this is too much information but I'm not sure exactly what's important. I'm adding a still picture, but it's kind of dark because of the feeder.

THANKS AGAIN!

Hi Jade, Yes that is the Tufted Titmouse. They can raise and lower their crest as they want. They are wonderful little birds, very fast and not always easy to get a photo taken. I really love mine.

Congratulations!

Here is more info on them. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Tufted_Titmouse/id

I can't thank you enough. I know it's a small thing in life, but it's really been annoying me to not be able to figure out what kind of bird this was. A few more have come since I sat down a few minutes ago and had their tufts showing when they were in certain positions. Coincidentally, I was just looking for a window insert feeder for my mother and found the tufted titmouse on the list of birds that will most often come to them.

Thank you also for the link. It had pictures and described exactly what I had said in the last post about how he goes to the perch and bangs on the seed with his beak. It says they prefer sunflower seeds, and that's in the big mix that's in my feeder, so I guess that's what he has when he does that. I hadn't been able to tell exactly what he was picking up from the mix because he does it quickly and holds it between his feet so that I can't see what it is.

Thank you again, Pelletory. You've really made my day.

Your more than welcome Jade.
They also like unshelled peanut halves (no salt).
