root exposure

Hi
I have a japanese cherry tree that is about eight years old, and a pleasure to see. There's also a small issue: the roots fan out and away from the trunk, and a number of them snake, exposed on the soil surface. Now I've noticed that the bark on some of these exposed roots is peeled off, either as a result of kid sneakers trampling on them, or from animals biting on them. I didn't see clear bite marks, but still...
So how serious is this? What can I do since I can't wrap these branches around, because they are only exposed on their upper part?

IMO, if the tree is healthy you have nothing to worry about. If it were mine I might lightly mulch and protect the root zone from foot traffic.
Where is VV when you need him?

Thank you! I thought about mulching, but the area around the base of the trunk is a bit raised, so I think it'd be brushed away like nothing.

I think I have identified the offending factor: the lawn mowers that come do the backyard every couple of weeks. Speaking Spanish as a native comes handy in these types of situations with the added advantage that the usual knee-jerk defensive position in fear of liability doesn't seem to have ravaged the psyche of our friendly central american landscapers.

So I got a full confession without any effort - si, es la maquina que dana el arbolito... Refreshing like a cold glass of lime juice... And the "patron" will never know...
