Oriole migration habits

Valparaiso, IN

My orioles show about the first week of May. This year I have about Dozen of them hanging around. It is great! They love grape jelly, I go through about 2 jars a week. My question is, I have read that they stop by the Midwest on their way to Canada. How long do they stay here? I live in northwest Indiana by Lake Mlichigan. Will they stay all summer as long as I feed them. In years past I usually don't see any after the second week in May but this year they have been here for a month now. And if they leave, do they stop back on their way back to Mexico.
Any info is welcomed, all the other sites I have checked have very little info on the subject of migration.

Thanks

Some may have been on passage, but they also breed throughout Indiana. If you've had the same individuals for a month, they'll be local breeders, as individual birds on spring passage typically only stay 3-4 days at any one site before moving on.

Resin,
Thanks for the quick answer.
Wow, I didn't know they breed here in Indiana. So will the breeders stay all summer or will they eventually migrate north also?

Thanks again,

I have orioles all summer, so keep feeding them! I feed grape jelly, grapes and oranges. I also have a nectar feeder for them. Mine arrive around the 3rd week of April...when the apple trees start to blossom here in Putnam County. They don't stay to long....they are one of the first to leave in late summer. They are pretty much gone by the end of July...except for those passing thru who had migrated further north. But I enjoy them so much. If they nest nearby they will bring their fledglings to feed. Next year they will all return to the same area and your population will grow over time!!

We aren't sure exactly how many we have this year. We have seen up to 6 at the same time in the yard. We also get Gray Catbirds too now since they like the same things to eat. You may find a number of different birds like you new buffet!

Enjoy your orioles!

Nanny_56,

That is nice to know, in will keep the grape jelly stocked! It seemed that last year they left after awhile. But this year I have 8 at one time that I counted. I think 3 to 4 females. I have catbirds also, I like those allot, especially there song. I also this year have my first bluebirds nesting. The young should fledge any day now. I am at the patio door constantly hoping I don't miss it! Their mealworms feeder is on my deck so they are always close enough to see.
I have a humming bird feeder on my deck close to a patio door and the bees guards kept falling off, until I saw an oriole on it flicking the bees guards off to get to the nectar. And of course the hummingbird showed up and wasn't too happy. Wish I had my video going, but missed it. So off course I had to put an oriole nectar feeder
there.
Thanks so much for your answer. Hope my orioles stick around!
