How about a Guinea thread

Annie I have no idea! The little Brown Chipmunky ones look exactly like the Mama and Papa did when they were babies. I was very surprised that "Pearl" Guineas dtart out this way! Im hoping for a few whites and a Lavender or blue one.
Im planning on finding homes for at least 8 of these little guys, if I dont I will be covered in Guineas next Spring! LOL!

I don't want to sound like a cannibal , but the meat is much better than chicken . White ones have all white meat .It would be healthier than chicken out of the store. You will have them all named before it's over . Betcha !

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

Hmmm. Doesn't look too far on the map. I've always wanted Guineas...

NONONON!!

Stop! I am feeding the fox (?) well enough already.
Sigh.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Ooh Catmad, Pelzer really isnt that far!! You just neeeeeed a pair of Keets .....dont you! That old Fox wouldnt be a problem if youput these little fellas in a good brooder pen!

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

It's not when they're little I'm worried about, I'm very over-protetive of babies. TIt's when the go out into the world. How good are guineas at self protection? I've got some fencing going on, which will help, but not completely eliminate the issues.

My two grown birds are soooo fast! They are just too funny, they never walk unless grazing. they usually roost in the trees at night. they are just too aware of everyting that moves around them and they guard my Chickens! Any strange animal ( including poor rabbits) set off their amazing alarm.
They have very powerful feet and claws , not to mention a beak attached to a clamp like jaw! A fox or possum would have a fight on their hands for sure!

Give in to the impulse, Catmad! Everyone should have a guinea or 5. Not only will they eat all the bugs think how cute they'll look decorating your trees...

Richmond, TX

Are they smart enough to keep out of the reach of dogs?

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Havent had any worry about Dogs since Ive had them. they get along fine with mine as long as they now stay away from the Keets, Mama already had to set my Chihuahua straight about who gets to play with them! Mr. P.P. gives them a wide berth now!

I love my guineas.. I have had them for as long as I can remember.. Since before I was married and that was 37 years ago.. We are on the farm and only family lives close by and most of them hate guineas and the noise..I was here first and they knew about all the critters.. If they wanna live on my farm, there will be guineas.LOL..When I have babies, I have to raise them in the coop or something picks them off 1 by 1.. Same thing with the adults, I let them free range a few hours each day, letting them out in time for 3-4 hours of freedom..Still have an occasional hawk, fox or bobcat make off with one.. Also have had a few run over on our dirt road..For some reason, they like the woods on that side of the farm, lol..

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

Y'all are ganging up on me. No, don't, stop, no , don't stop, no, don't stop, don't stop.....

I had been offered some, and of course agreed, but when they never arrived, I asked what had happened, apparently, they "Got Et".

I'm thinking...

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

You are so funny Cat!!! so I wont Stop! You would love these funny critters! they are too cute to watch running and bossing everything!
I actually watched "Cher-Peak", the male guinea, refferree a stand off between two of my Serama Cockerals. He watched then intervened, by dodging at them everytime they flew at one another! He also decides just which roo is going to mount a hen! He seems to know that my Wyandotte "Roho" has all the LF girls and the Serama Guys are supposed to be with the Serama Girls, Then one particular Serama Roo has a Cochin bantam lady friend. He keeps everyone on track and if they "Wander" he just wont put up with it... no nonsense or "hanky Panky" while he is on the job! He can cover a 3 acre plot of land in 30 seconds flat! LOL!!!!

Dahlonega, GA

OOfie , you don't need a dog , you have him !

(Zone 5b)

Stop thinking, catmad, and just get some! I'm already looking forward to your entertaining Guinea story's.

Dahlonega, GA

Yeah , Cat , just get it over with .

(Zone 5b)

LOL Digger!

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

Got to get thru the chick order that shipped today first....

Dahlonega, GA

Oh , then they can be cousins .

Elkhart, IA(Zone 5a)

They are sooo cute! Where can I get some guineas? I've heard they are noisy but that they eat ticks and are great foragers.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Oh They are cute ! Ive gotten a lot of laughs watching their antics! they were a lot of fun ....at first!!!! Now the rest of the story!
It seems that the mom and Pop, whom I raised from tiny little babies, are now very food aggressive. they are so protective of the "keets" that they make sure that they get the first food and no one else is allowed to eat! Every time I put the feed into a feeder the parents run off the Chickens. They follow me to each feeder and sometimes since they know my routine, make it to the next feeder before I do! With 11 keets and 2 adult Guineas, thats a lot of feed! Im now trying to figure out a way to catch them with out the parents "eating me alive"! I separated my large fowl into large 10X10 wire kennels, hoping to keep the guineas from their food! Well the keets go right through the wire and the adults just fly over! sigh!! Im having to rethink the Guinea issue now! Instead of having a good bug and critter deterrent Ive created a Feed eating monster!
