Miscellaneus Shots 2011 - No. 3

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

5 - last one

- Took a bunch of these pics, the show went on for about 20 mins. I was getting a 'kink' in my neck from looking up through the camera so I just stopped after awhile and just enjoyed the show. (lol)

Looked like it was a great show....our town sets of the fireworks during the fireman's carnival which will be in a few weeks.....

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Love your photos, WC. Did not like the constant singing (except for the choral group) on the Macy's show. Next year I'll turn the sound off.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice, WC.

I turned on the NYC show just when the fireworks started. Their 'entertainment' is always horrible.

We had an orchestra that played some excerpts from Copeland, Dvorak and a few other composers that lasted for about an hour, then we had a short intermission before another hour of music from theater productions like Evita & The Phantom of the opera, etc..
It was a nice atmosphere with a girl scout color guard, a couple of the scouts were chosen to 'conduct the orchestra' for a brief time. It was very light hearted and fun. The veterans got recognized many times and were asked to stand at one point, everyone around them shook their hand etc... a family event.

The fireworks were computer synchronized to music. even though it was a professional pyrotechnic display, 2 of the shells didn't explode in the air but instead came down and exploded on the ground, you could see the red glowing smoke a few hundred feet from the staging area. There's always a risk of something going wrong once those rockets are launched and they are under their own power.
- It did take an hour to get out of the parking lot though.. (lol!) - they had shuttle buses from Nassau county and transportation for the elderly to and from the parking lot from the theater area.. It was nice, - can't beat the price!

Nice shots, WC. I am not a big fan of fireworks because I don't like the crowds or the noise. I convinced hubby to watch them from my office (which overlooks the river from whence they come). In the past, it was a decent view, but not perfect as there are trees in the way. This year I remembered the secret ladder to the roof. What a view!! And no people or traffic :)

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I'm the same way, DW is the fireworks fan, I'm the classical music fan so we both got what we like the most. If I would have stayed at home I'd be worried that some idot neighbor's firework may hit the house or window, besides it's good to get out of the house since in winter you don't want to go out because of the cold and in summer because of the heat.
Florida had some nice fireworks every year on the Fort Lauderdale beach, no entertainment or any sort of conveniences whatsoever, but very nice visually because the water mirrored the explosions in the sky.
- Don't know if they still do it now, (some places didn't have any shows this year because of budget constraints), that was ~10yrs ago.

When I was a child, my parents would take me to the town of Naugatuck, to the old train station platform.....at the end, so many rockets exploded that the platform shook, & the noise was deafening....I remember crying, but my parents didn't care....they still dragged me there.....I was happy when the show was stopped I think for budgetary reasons, but I may be wrong....many, many years ago.....

:)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I like snakes!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

YUK on the snake!!! On the other hand I can bet Bill is not bothered by mice, voles or moles. :)

Nice fireworks WC! Thank you very much as I missed them last night.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

ok good point.. and I am sure he won't be overloaded with chipmunks like I am this year.. I was hanging out in a chair up in the back yard yesterday.. must have saw 10 chips at once.. just imagine how many I can't see.. amazing how much damage they are doing this year.. getting me cranky

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i take care of the chippy population and the voles are in the front yard - not sure what the snake is after since the pond is filled with frogs for the taking

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Wow you got some serious looking snakes up there Bill!

- welcome Celeste, hope you get to see them in person next year!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

that one is not even the big one:)

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Would not be able to garden with that snake....I would be forever screaming! Allison, this is the year of the chipmunks....they seem to like to dash in front of my car daily....

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

They love the water!! You have a good variety of feathered friends who like to bathe at your house I see! LOL

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I slowed down filling my feeders.. the grackles are clearing us out.. even though the feeders we have only let them eat 1 at a time.. amazing how much seed they burn through .. had to ration them

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

is #2 a cowbird?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

yes, looks like it to me.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

bigen

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Nice fountain setup, easy maintenance, wind chimes add a nice touch. Like a mini 'Zen' garden.. cool
Too many of those grackles here this year..

Yes I agree it's a cowbird, I kinda like those, they're a little skittish though. (at least here they are..)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

it is easy maint... when it gets gross I just dump it .. rinse the base (can't see in photo).. and just keep an eye out for skeeter larva.. but the last few times the water got so gross I have been changing it twice a week.. seems the grackles love to bathe .. I do have one of the pouches in it for the skeeters too

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes, I'm finding that out about the grackles too. I hope their increase in numbers is temporary...
I have 2 bird baths so I have to fill each at least once a day, the robins will take baths all day long as long as there's water!

Thomaston, CT

Love that fountain.....had a half-grown flicker on the porch, & he couldn't find his way out....I tried to guide him using a hat, but he went down in a corner, tried to cover himself with his wings....so pathetic! I finally had to pick him up & place him on the patio.....he was just terrified....

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I can't get a good photo of a flicker.. and here you are picking one up.. LOL

I have tried 2 years now to get the shot of the yellow belly sap sucker. I pick up the camera and it freaks out and leaves

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

same here with the oriels.. they are gone before I get out the door

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

All the grackles must have moved up by you, they were emptying my feeders in a day haven't heard or seen them in awhile

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

they are just terrible
