Small plant, hopefully it will bloom in two years. That is how long it took for my first two I. andersonii plants to bloom in 2003, these were the last three seeds I had left. Sometimes you trade away most of yours seeds and never hear from these people again, so you don't know if they got anything going. I don't know if anyone has any plants or seeds for this anymore.
Only one seed germinated from my seeds of 2003/2004
Ipomoea Andersonii
Here is my Blue Speckled, it is a small flower compared to the larger I. nils. First bloom of the season for these, the next one will bloom tomorrow. I hand pollinated this to itself and cross pollinated it to the pink colored flower. It had plenty of pollen. Will do the same cross tomorrow as there are buds on each ready to open again.
A. Your blue speckled is so pretty, really like it!
Gourd - I am glad that you are growing out another Ipomoea Andersonii vine! Two years to bloom? Drat! I was hoping it would bloom this year!
Looking good all those vines! The Pes-Caprae seedling looks better than any I've seen here along the beach. What soil mix are you growing it in?
Your blue speckled looks very similar in bloom to what my 2 current F2 Blue Speckles vines look like. Though the leaves on my vines are variegated. I love them all!!!
That sounds like an interesting cross with the dark pink blooming vine! Nice rich color on that pink one! It reminds me a little of the blooms on my Sidare. (It bloomed for the first time today! Yay!)
Thanks guys,
another bloom today of the blue speckles and it is a whole lot bigger than the first one, same size as the pink one. Will post photos later.
Happy Mother's Day to you all.
My son is on his way over and we got lots of food going on here.. ttyl.
A.
A, I love the blue speckled too, so pretty.
Thanks guys,
I hope your Mother's day was great Helena, Jackie and Becky, I got a baby African Tortoise Sulcata, it is the size of a silver dollar and fits in my palm. It was a Mother's Day gift from my son. I've been wanting one for years, so, this little tiny tan turtle was sitting in a little box at the front door of my studio as a surprise.. it will grow up to be about 100 lbs (more or less) and is named Sherman after one of the military tanks because it will be as strong as a tank...lol
Wonderful photos of I.andersonii, and Pes-caprae. From time to time Silverhill has seeds of Pes-Caprae, no doubt from S African beaches. Your son is thoughtful.
Yes, he is.. my little African Sherman tank will grow up someday.
A - LOL! about your new baby's name! Sherman! Sounds most perfect for the little guy who will one day be small tank! :-) Sounds like you had a wonderful Mother's Day! I hope everyone else did, too! I certainly did, too! :-)
Yes, everyone visited the other dozen of my box turtles and we all took turns holding Sherman.. ate BBQ and just had a good family day.
I'm glad you did also. I showed off my blue speckled flowers and the fushia too, then they all got a tour of the studio, almost done..... it is going to be a great year, now I have one more large construction project that is about to begin in three weeks.... a very private courtyard that will be right outside our back door... more work, more $$, but, someday it will be complete and we can drink Ice tea out there without the wind taking off with my market umbrella..lol
A, Send us a pic of baby Sherman when you can. I love turtles too.
Wonderful that your studio is almost complete. Wish I had one. :-)
Oops crossed in cyber space, Sherman is a cutie

Cute pics A. Could you place some flat rocks for him to crawl up on and a couple for him to get on to make it easier for him to get out?
A, what I meant was The first two rocks for him to sun himself on.
I love his color, so different from other turtles.
Good idea, i'll go do that now, he needs steps. lol, I found him trying to get out against the wall, so I helped him out .. yes at firstt I thought he was almost albino, but, I think all Sulcatas are tan in color, you couldn't tell that from all the mud on them though. Aren't they cute!! He looks so new and clean compared to my other fellows. Although I've got some pretty small babies boxies too, some are two years old now and I had them at one year old babies, they are tough little cookies to make it through hibernation.
A, I worked with a lady whose mom had a huge turtle, I assume it was a big box turtle.
He hibernated in her closet every winter. When he was ready to go outside, he would knock on the door. I still laugh every time I think about her turtle, house trained. lol
He was about 2 feet long.
Reminds me of that song, "Knock Three Times" that is really something that he knocks on the door, I may have to do that when mine gets bigger. I'll bet it is also a Sulcata. Many folks here have seen them walking down the streets and to be honest with you, I've never seen a wild turtle in my life, or a lost one for that matter.
I have rescued some that were in boxes and cats were trying to eat them. Big gentle creatures from heaven...
They are intelligent and funny, each has a unique personality for turtles, who would have thought they were so different.
A.
A - Sherman is a cutie! :-)
Jackie - LOL about the turtle that knocked on the closet door! And is house-broken as well? That's pretty cool!
A - I love your Blue Speckles! The blooms are really beautiful!!! Is that vine from some of the seeds from the Blue Speckles you sent me or are these from somewhere else? How big are the blooms? They look large. Mine were only about 3". Smaller like an I. purpurea, but it bloomed profusely for me! Here is what my F2 Blue Speckles Variegated Leaf vines look like. I just managed to get 2 seeds from one of these vines, so I will be starting the F3 grow-out next! :-) I am wondering what will show up in the next generation...

oooh, I see a couple of seedpods, that is great.
They are from the same seeds that the ones I have are, also, isn't it something that you got all variegated leaves? I got all solid green leaves and the flowers are about 5 inches across so far. Also, all three that have bloomed here are forming seedpods. Tonight I'll transplant them into 3 gallon pots, so that hopefully it will bloom more and thus more seeds, I see lots of buds on them and I have about 5 more small cups with the blue speckled.
My original vine which was the seed from you that I grew in a 5 gallon container, but the blooms never got as big as the ones you are growing currently. The genes in this vine are a wild card if you ask me ... you never know for sure what you are going to get! It entertains me with each germinated seedling and then the blooms are the biggest thrill of all. It's definitely got some great genetic spirit!
I need to feed them tomorrow, I'm afraid to over fertilize too. These turned out to be a very diverse to say the least, I. nil. Save me seeds from yours and I'll save you seeds from the solid green leaves if it is okay with you. We still need to see what the tan seeds will do this year, I've got buds on some of the seedlings I think.
A.
Sounds like a plan! Definitely! :-)
Becky, the two flowers today were very small, maybe they are going to be on the small side.
Mine have been small like that of an I. purpurea. And that has been consistently smaller with all grow-outs so far.
Pretty blooms A.
NICE!!! Mine look similar to yours! :-)
These are all coming out like this, which is getting to be as stable as they are going to get. I also got a chocolate speckled today, but, I don't really have the energy to take photos lately, just too tired... Maybe the next bloom.
