Garden Projects #4
I don't like it.
Hee hee! Wonderful, Patti!
Patti - I hadn't thought of using the gazillion pine needles we have in our woods as material for the paths. That's a great idea. With the girls we are always concerned with ticks that abound in the pine needles, but that problem is time limited each summer.
Oh, and I forgot to tell you how much I love the look of your gardens!!!
That area came out really well....will love to see it with the new plantings.....
Even though I don't feel good, I HAD to get outside after the rain stopped. Pulled some weeds, sprayed some fairy garden objects with the outdoor sealer, planted 1 plant from the swap and spread some more mulch....ahhhhhh, now I'm going to go collapse!
Hope you feel better tomorrow, Jen! I'm aching all over, but only because I overdid it outside trying to get new plants in. Tomorrow we're going to the bare root daylily sale at Davis Brook Daylily Farm. Uh Oh. That's a really dangerous place for me. :) No aches and pains there, I'll bet!
Thanks all. I have been raking up the pine needles that fall into the drive for years to use as the path. I try not to ever take them from the woods. But the ticks are everywhere, woods, grass, garden, on the rabbits, deer, mice, dogs and as of last night, one on me too. I pulled off one on my back. Got it all and am saving it to show to the doctors today at Brigham. I have appointments and x rays this morning for my esophageal issues, but am expecting good news. Routine checkup. As for the tick, I don't think it is a deer tick, too big. But will get meds if it is.
Jen, feel better soon. Horrible time to be out of the garden.
DonnieBrook, Have fun at your sale. I am so overloaded with DL's, but would add more if I could and no doubt will.
Went to the studio yesterday and will go again as soon as I am done at the hospital. Going home tomorrow and will empty out the GH. Dreaded project.
DH decided that we would not finish up the new veggie bed area this year, but instead just keep working on the space to prep it for next year by keeping it clear of weeds and maybe putting up the fence in the fall. That takes a bunch of the pressure off to get that project done. If I could think of something that the deer don't eat I might plant that in the space, but they eat everything I think. Patti
they leave my irises alone
onewish1, are you eating iris? Ha, I was thinking veggies. I notice that the rabbits nibble on my Iris leaves and that the deer will come along and pull out the newly planted ones and then spit them out a few feet away. The deer have been nibbling on some of our new Japanese maples. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. DH is going to spray them. I talked to a women who is now running a new garden department at one of our local lumber yards who said a mixture of half milk and half water works as well as those expensive commercial sprays. We are going to try it and I will let you know what I think I may do a test planting of some sacrificial hosta to give it a real test. Patti
Wow - everything grew a lot in the past week due to the rain. Weeds too!
Hope all is well with the tests, Patti. Maybe deer won't eat cukes or zukes because of the prickly foliage.....Louise, have fun at that sale!
Oh, I DID, Marilyn!! lol Nostradamus would have approved of how I spent the day!!
Good thing I dont follow the news much. I remember the last Rapture over 20 years ago.
Nuttin happened then either, except people who gave away all their money believing the world would end are still broke.
I just happened to catch the news photo of the crowd in Times Square.
When I used to take the subway to school and work, there was a guy who was always predicting the end of the world. Gave specific dates. When they passed, you would see him some days later with a new sign and date.
LOL
The weeds didn't leave, either....trying to mulch, but it's a losing battle.
Worked very hard outside today. I'll sleep well! I pulled out another section of hundreds of ditch lilies and made a series of paths through the new stone wall garden. I'm going to be very happy with the garden once things start blooming. Hank took all the ditch lilies down to the brook and "planted" them in the ditches along the brook. I asked him if he planted them all, and he said that he "sorta" planted them in the ditches without any dirt. That will be interesting to see how that works out. lol He said, "They ARE ditch lilies, aren't they? :) I moved several plants 3 or 4 times today until I got it the way I wanted it. I had to wait to see if the world ended before I put all that effort into removing the rest of the orange lilies.
Louise I can feel your pain... we have some I can't even get out.. they must be jammed between boulders underground and I can't even dig em out... Randy and I worked hard today as well.. we planted the two azaleas and most of the stuff from the swap & Celeste... only a small pile of plants left and there are a bunch I am planting in containers.. I felt like we did something.. now I have to do those mum cuttings tomorrow.. didn't feel like it today
:)
Can't blame you, Allison. I potted up some stellas and some fuchsia cranesbill. Little by little.....
and once again I am happy the coleus is inside still... I actually put my heat on tonight.. just raw and damp out
And another crappy weekly forecast. Starting to remind me of two years ago.
I agree.. a blight wet year again
:(
worked hard here too - planted out the veggie garden today - planted a bunch more stuff and started moving the 20 yds of mulch that was delivered yesterday - went with dark pine instead of hemock so that means i am raking out the old hemlock which is really slowing down progress.
do you have a quad or something bill?... I think I remember having some sort of power toy to move that stuff around
no just a wheel barrel
wow you are nuts!!!
:)
i've never heard that before:) think of it as exercise - can't wait till it is spread
Planted more perennials, weeded and mulched a couple of beds, mowed the grass. Still got more plants on order from the west coast. Received back pain for the effort. :)
My son worked at Lowes while in college, he complained of the heavy work - in the lumber dept, but I told him to think of it as a free gym membership.
Had my wrought iron gate and fencing delivered today. Looks nice.
nice - pictures when installed
Too wet & rainy to work on anything today....sounds like the rest of you are much more ambitious than I.......
If ambitious describes walking over to the delivered fence and looking down at it, then I'll take credit. ^_^
OK...that's actually more than I've done today, except take bags of mulch out of the Tahoe......
I took out the garbage and then took a nap!!!!
That's next on my list...taking out the garbage...love it when it's raining so.....
Good for you, Frank! It's that kind of day. I have three cats within feet of me all napping. I may join them.
which style did you order victor?
Forgot if it had a name, Bill!
