We had a raccoon that would get on the Cottonwood tree and come down to get a drink of water from the birdbath, well, the last time was the last time, he broke the bath, it broke on the base. Here is a picture of it. So until I can get another one, the birds will have to get water somewhere else, I was going to put the top on the ground but too many cats.
Teddy's birds
Sorry to hear that Teddy. Raccoons can be so destructive.
That is too bad Teddy.
I am sending a picture of my hummingbird feeder, it has a small problem, it leaks in 3 places. Is there anything I can put on it to stop the leaks, I want the hummers to be able to get used to it before I get a different one, I took the round feeder down because the starlings and grackles were getting in it. Is there something I can use to seal the leaks that won't hurt the feeder? This is obviously a past picture, but this is the same feeder.
Hi Teddy, I don't know about stopping the leaks but the hummers don't need any time to get used to certain feeders. As soon as they see the red feeder they are there.
Hope it won't be too expensive to do so, but I'd throw it away and get a new one. Leaks mean cracks, and cracks are good places for bacteria and fungi to hide and contaminate the sugar solution. And that can be bad for the hummers.
Resin
A neighbor gave us two single feeders, I am thinking of putting one of them up there.
You won't believe what we found in our front yard, a wood duck egg, it is not cracked or broke, I took a picture of it because if I told anyone they would not believe me, hopefully Mama will come back after it. I am going to keep an eye on it so the other critters won't try to take off with it. We did not touch or move it, so I hope she comes back for it.
that is weird....I wonder if some other animal took the egg from the nest and dropped it there? Do you ever see the wood Ducks? Would be great to get some photos of them. They are so pretty!
Yes, we see them quite often, the mama duck flew overhead just as I went outside. I don't know what to do with it, I did touch it and it was still warm. Do I just leave it alone or can I do anything to help it. I will ty to get some pics of them, they seem to like our Cottonwood tree a lot, she had a nest in their last year, and it looks like she is going to have them there again. Any advice would be appreciated.
I have no idea what to do.....
I would bet a Raccoon stole the egg from mama duck's nest. Last year my neighbor found 4 duck eggs behind his woodpile. A Raccoon dragged them up there without even cracking them. Next morning, they were eaten. Raccoons are cute, but nasty, destructive critters.
I thought so too, but I am looking at it still on the ground! I have no idea why the raccoon did not eat it. But I could not afford to get the food and so I thought maybe it was a bad one that mama kicked out so I will put it in the backyard so it won't stink if someone accidentally kicks it or runs over it. I am going to clean out the hummingbird feeder and put some fresh in it, maybe it will stay in it long enough for someone to find it. I think the windy weather we had blew the nectar out because the top is sticky. I have not seen any yet, but the weather is going to get warmer and maybe they will start, I am kind of getting worried. I have never had to wait so long for any hummers to find it.
Saw my first Hummingbird today! It did not stop to drink but kept going, so I am happy about that, I hope the wps like Raisin suet cake because my hubby got a no melt one for them. In fact he bought 4or5 of the no melt ones.Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there. Have a very good day.
Keep looking around for No Melt that is cheaper...I only pay like a $1.99 for it here. There are brands that cost more but I have to watch the budget. I get the orange.....don't worry about the flavors during the summer! lol
Nice photo!
Thanks, I get lucky with a good shot every now and again.
Could be. They used to come to one I have in the flower bed.
We have tried our best to entice the Pileated wp to our yard, my hubby and I were sitting out today and he happened to look in the side yard where the stump is, he saw something large on it. But he did not have the camera. I originally got the stump so that the neighbors who came to visit would have somewhere to sit, but if he wants to peck on it, he is welcome.
Could this be the work of our resident pileated woodpecker? This is a old piece of stump that the neighbor cut in 3 pieces. Could anyone tell me what is doing this?
Cat scratching post, maybe?
We have a new bird visiting us, there has been a Baltimore Oriole eating out of the bigger feeder for a couple of days, I got a picture of him but won't post it because it is blurry. Hopefully I can get a better one to post, I will wait until I get the better one and put it in my lifer list. They are beautiful!
Congratulations Teddy!
I would love to see an Oriole. They just don't "hang out" in my part of the world.
Very nice! They are beautiful birds.
Finally a new bird, I love he red-bellied woodpeckers and the others, but it is nice to see a new bird once in a while!
Very nice teddy! You really do need to try to see new birds. You are missing so much and it will make your thread more interesting for people to look at.
how do I keep ants out of the single feeders?
I know some folks make their own ant moat that hangs right above the feeder.
I use grease to keep the ants at bay just coat the hanger with grease I use an automotive grease and also I put peanut butter in the cracks on the trees for my friend the Downy wp as well as the red bellied and the little wrens like that also and the sparrows and cardinals can't hold on to the bark so that helps keep them out
I tried peanut butter in the cracks but the squirrels got to the pb before the birds could. I think we are going to try the ant moat idea.
How do Hummingbirds eat from Irises? I read that they like them, but how do they get into the flower to get the nectar.
hummers have very long tongues!
