I called up animal services and they said to let it go in a safe area, so we drove to some scrub down the road where there is wilderness and let him go. It was far enough away from the road and lots of trees and scrub to hide in. I am not opposed to having wildlife in my yard, last year I had a resident toad and this year I saw a black racer snake already, however if you start eating ALL my veggies and don't leave me any then I've got a problem with you.
I'm not sure if the mother is around or if there are any more, I know I have seen a possum around here 2-3 years ago but not since.
I am pretty positive that it was the possum eating my veggies because a few times I startled it at dusk and saw it run up my Queens Wreath bush, I thought it was originally a rat because I saw the tail.
Something is snipping off my seedlings....
We have found possums along with the groundhogs to be the most destructive of all our wildlife in the vegetable garden. The deer are kept out with the fencing but the possums and groundhogs climb over the 6 ft. fencing and can be voracious eaters. Possums especially love broccoli and will eat it to the ground. If they have avoided your garden you have been lucky. I think it was a good idea to take it away to a more isolated spot. Hopefully you can catch the adults as well so they are reunited and out of your garden!!

I hope you took it far enough away. I know that with raccoons they'll return to their home even if you take them five or ten miles away, and they will also swim rivers to get back. Wildlife people here tell you that it's better to destroy an animal than to transfer it to another area because it will often just be killed by the animals who have already established that area as their own territory. That said, we have relocated raccoons, but twenty or thirty miles away. DH has shot groundhogs and we just lent a friend our Havahart trap because she has a whole family of them ruining her garden.
